We need a like button for posts like these.

Anyone got an solution to my problem?

I hit my threshold on my uncapped account so I can't exactly google it (2KBps internet FTL).

Have to leave in about 15 minutes but will do a google and see if I can help in that time.

froot, what I could quickly find via google is that you need to reinstall your gfx drivers. Log into classic, install/re-install gfx drivers and try again. Shout if this did not work and I'll keep searching.

Help?!
Upgraded from 10.10 on my desktop. Restarted to complete install.
Getting (after the pink boot screen) "it seems you do not have the hw to run unity, please select ubuntu classic at the login screen...".
I think this might be because I'm using xinerama (dual screen) which I know is incompatible with compiz.

The pc stalls there. No kb or mouse activity. Anyone got a solution?

Can you try boot with ubuntu live cd, modify your xorg.conf ( /etc/X11/xorg.conf ) to disable xinerama? (Option "Xinerama" "0") then boot normally?

AS a last resort:
hi, as the UK has come to a halt due to a bit of snow I thought I'd do some iso testing.

I've chosen to start with the first case on the ISO Testing tracker http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/, the Free Software only install. The test PC has an nVidia card so I expected a 2d desktop and got one with the following message.

Information:
Sorry you don't have 3d support, install it for
your graphic hardware to get Unity or please
reboot and select "Classic session" at startup.

Which is fine, as it's a free software install I would not have the option or want to add restricted drivers so should only have the 2d DT. The question is the message states "please reboot and select "Classic session" at startup" but How?

I have a Grub startup which shows no other option and the logon which again gives no option and when I get to the DT I get the same message. I assume that if I could login as a classic session it would remove the message. Is this a bug or a feature?

I know I can go into [System], [Administration], [Login Screen] and change [Ubuntu desktop Edition] to [Ubuntu Classic Desktop] but this is not obvious from the message box and a new user would struggle to find it.

Just to let you know, you can still use free software only and have 3D by installing libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental, it's in the repositories.

For your other matter, I hope you created a bug. The devs have decided that the default should be the Ubuntu Desktop, which I personally don't agree with. I would prefer it default to the Classic Desktop, so that those of us that need extra drivers to enable 3D can install them, and then login in the standard desktop.

Ok, the xinerama 0 doesn't work. Will try reconfigure xorg and my drivers via the root terminal

Sigh.
Reinstalling/removing nvidia drivers doesn't work, as with reconfiguring xorg. Startx won't work "no screens found".
I can't query a full update because getting wlan to work via the terminal and googling it on my phone, is somewhat problematic. Will copy the files from /home to an external via live cd, then reinstall ubuntu from scratch. Hopefully that works.

Thanks :)
I'll rather yank my router across the house and plug it in via eth0. I've had enough nightmares having to fix short term hacks :p
Anyhows, I'm getting 2cm text on my screen so outputs aren't very readable and scroll to the end of the output.

Wow, how's this for screwed...
Turns out my 11.04 cd has an error on 1 file so it won't complete the install. Now I can't boot into windows either, because ubuntu install failed, therefore gru is borked beyond recognition.
I also don't have the 10.10 disk, because I borrowed it to a friend. And I can't seem to find any older disks :(

Wow, where in the world did you find that museum piece? It is 3 years old!
:D

Well, I still have a Gentoo 1.4 disk somewhere in my CD collection, hope I never have to use that to recover from some damage!
:)

GOOD LUCK!

OK, so I've tested Natty out a bit on my Netbook and so far really impressed. Ironic that now that I'm just about replace my Netbook (new laptop arrives next week), finally Ubuntu releases an out of the box distro that is 100% perfect.

On the new Unity interface, you either like it or loath it. Its great for non technical users and tablets. Still undecided. Currently running in Gnome Classic mode and going back to Unity next time I boot up. This is the great thing about this distro, you select the Unity, Gnome Classic or Gnome without eye-kandy at login.

Just cannot get over the speed of this distro, really awesome for my old netbook and its dog slow SSD.

Also installed Natty on a new notebook in the office, everything worked 100% out of the box (ditto for the netbook). Can say that Ubuntu is one massive step closer to mass consumer adoption now with this distro. The install wizard is without a doubt the best I've ever seen for an OS. Even JuJu could do it.

The only "issue" is the flash plugin. When prompted by firefox to install automatically it fails - you need to do this in the command line. Don't understand why this critical issue was overlooked for this distro. But for a fresh release its stable. Normally I wait 3-6mths before I upgade my wifes work PC but I'm going to do it tomorrow I'm so confident with this release.

Happened once before to me, ever since then I always check the disk/flash drive for errors before installing.

I tested Unity on my laptop, and, being a technical user, I unfortunately find it lacking in its present form. The lack of customization is appalling. No systray, keepassx isn't rendered on screen after clicking the launcher in the unity dock, and a couple of other things (including the bug where proprietary drivers app says "driver is activated but not in use", notwithstanding the neatly written xorg.conf and all effects working).

When I dabbled in KDE back in 2001, it wasn't in its prime. Now, after Unity yesterday, I realise that KDE 4.6.2 is really a good DE in comparison. Goodbye, Gnome/Unity after so many years.

As easy as
Code:
 sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

Congrats, KDE team.

Going to give KDE another try too, Unity sucks face. If I still don't like KDE, I'm going to go Fedora 15 with Gnome3.

That's about what one could describe it as (at this stage). Developers have actually done an awesome job to take it where they wanted it. In my opinion, however, they could not cater for everyone. That's why linux is about choice.

Try KDE now, I was not disappointed. Some of their desktop widgets are not there yet quality-wise, but the overall feel has turned into something much more agile than it used to be.

And naturally, you may run all your Gnome apps as before. I am enjoying it from my new KDE desktop now :)
