KDE isstruggling along on my netbook, it is a little bit more resource intesive than Unity (with Desktop Effects turned on) but I can get used to it. After this the only other real option would be Openbox, but I'll stick with KDE for a while longer.

Problem is Ubuntu starts up with way to many services and crap you never use. Maybe try a install using the minimal/net install cd and build your OS around that. I find it easier to start from a small base than trying to remove stuff after the fact. Then there's always Arch ;)

The fact that we can build a car from scratch doesn't mean everybody should now go out and buy parts and build one, some people just want to get something to drive and for that there is different models. Same goes for Linux, the fact that you can build one from scratch doesn't mean everyone has to, that is why there is different distributions.

That is the nice thing about the Debian/Ubuntu minimal install. You get to add to your setup as you like it, but it is still Debian, so you have most of the advantages,
with less of the disadvantages of actually building from scratch, ala Gentoo or similar. It's less building a car from scratch, than getting a very basic model, and then saying,
yah, I'll have the radio and aircon, thanks.

Unity is more like a wire-frame instead of a body of the car, you get the general idea of how the car is gonna look but it sure as hell not practical or anything to look at.

No issue with Nvidia drivers for me hey. ATI I know have given issues now.
With my reinstall I had a fresh install and simply "activated" thje Nvidia drivers. Where my original issue came in with my Unity crash, was my Nvidia drivers didn't update along with the rest of the install.

froot, what Nvidia card do you have and which driver version? Check in proprietary drivers app the status, it may say something like mine, "activated but not in use"; but the effects, etc, run ok (driver version 270.41.06). Great to know it works 100% on your side.

GTX460 and running 270.41.06.
I haven't tried to run fancy Compiz stuff because I'm running dual screen with Xinerama.

Keep it that way, Xinerama would be more important for now :) thanks.

Going to download the KDE and test it at work on Tuesday. Since I'm getting a Windows7 laptop this week, I'm considering putting KDE onto the wifes work PC to make the transition between the laptop and her desktop easier - she needs Win7 for her Pastel and Scrapbooking software and will often use the two PCs at the same time.

On Unity, I love it for my netbook and keeping it - but for a desktop or a working enviroment where you need multiple windows/apps running, give it a big skip.

I set up virtualbox on my ubuntu, which allows you to open up another os in a separate window. its fantastic, you still get all the benefits of ubuntu, but then when you need to run a windows only program, you fire it up, do your thing and are done.

The reason I hate it especially on my netbook is that it feels like Windows did couple of years back when I used it. Everything just felt too crowded. Ii is difficult to spread your work out on different desktops and to easily switch between them, you end up with all your applications open on the one desktop. It is difficult to explain but lets just leave it at that, it made me feel crowded on the netbook.

Thank god we have the option to switch to classic view. You boys know if you can make it your default setting?

Cause I cant bloody find anything. Just tried to find the screensaver thing (which was always easy to find under System...now I dont know where the hell it is! Also that launch thing on the left...when you have a window maximized it does not deploy fully...just kind of peeks out, but not coming out fully so you can click on it....almost like a shy turtle that is scared!

Also....I keep on looking to see where my "File - Edit - Tools" thingies are on at the top of my window and then you have to hover your mouse over the bar for it to show! It is just to confusing!!!!!!! I prefer the normal Gnome...and judging by Unitiy, I will be hating Gnome 3 also! urg.

:)

Lol, but isn't that the wrong mentality to have, just give it some time and you'll get used to the new placement :p I'll probably get it from varsity when I go in tomorrow, then I just gotta find a spare hard drive to install it on. The only spare 1 I've got atm has my Hackintosh on it and really don't feel like reinstalling that mess :)

ocleroux you are not alone :)

Unity is not for power users. It is a bling toy for folks who only surf and email. On average 3 clicks instead of 1. Multitasking ? what a hassle. I am truly anmazed that there are some on this forum who find it good. No fallback to gnome 2 in 6 months when the next one arrives.
When Lucid is retired I will switch to my current secondary distro, Scientific Linux SL6.
There is also Linux Mint Debian (LMDE) a rolling release based on Debian testing. Do yourself a favour and download the DVD - then compare it to Nutty (sic).
The Mint developers will probably come up with a more user friendly version of Unity - at least let's hope so.

Perhaps....but I am getting old in the tooth and frankly dont have the patience to "get used" to a new confusing interface that replaced a perfectly fine and logical one! Mark S, kiss my hairy ASS...but me still love Ubuntu see! Love you long time Mark! :)

Besides....how can you argue with the below....Gnome is still sexy BABY!!! haha
