Ubuntu previews new release

Why the big fuss about 3G support it's been in Mandriva for a while already ? :D

just a dig at the ubuntu fan boys

Maybe i should try Ubuntu some or other time.

but then again I'm in my comfort zone with SUSE and it does everything i want it to. Or maybe i must just try the server edition, that any gewd?

Im busy running the new 8.10 BETA.

You can see that they worked out a lot of bugs since 8.04 and the new gnome 2.24 is rather smooth.

So _far_ i'm impressed with the new ubuntu 8.10

Its a Gnome issue and not Ubuntu. Gnome Network Manager has been improved to handle 3G connections separately. Also it will auto connect when a user boots up their PC without having to login.

I've got an Ubuntu cd just laying at home but too lazy to switch, always thinks it's too much of a schlep but this one could finally suade me. Lord knows how much I hate windows!

Well I was running Ubuntu 8.10 since Alpha 6 and upgraded it to beta. OMF what a mistake, talk about an absolute F U.

Ah, gotta love it, although I must admit i found Alpha 6 to be pretty stable, will reinstall Ubuntu when 8.10 final is released at the end of October.

Ubuntu or Kubuntu :-? I'll stick to windows xp sp3 thank you ... Can someone tell me why there is a need for 2 different UI ? And why hasn Canonical (Shuttleworths company) made their own UI ? I'm sure they can innovate aswell as beg borrow & steal instead of using gnome or kde ?

Personal choice.

And why hasn Canonical (Shuttleworths company) made their own UI ?
They dont need to. There are dozens, but they will be spending more time improving the look of their current release.

I'm sure they can innovate aswell as beg borrow & steal instead of using gnome or kde ?

They do. http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/162

You dont beg, borrow or steal OpenSource code :P Lol. I think you have completely missed the point of OSS by saying silly things like "beg, borrow and steal" code.

They innovate a lot. You just have not looked.

They want to make a good user friendly linux OS, they dont want to make their own OS. :P

So you're asking why are there so many and why hasn't Canonical made another? :D Make up your mind.

You don't need two different UI (and there are many more than two), but it's great to have the choice. Some people like a clean UI that doesn't require too much config, others like to be able to tweak every last pixel etc.

why is it a gnome issue my gnome on my system reconises my 3G connection ?

I hope my broadcom nic will work without me having to figure things out with the ndis wrapper.

Please shuttleworth, make it work?

why is it a gnome issue my gnome on my system recognises my 3G connection ?

It probably has something to do with the Gnome Applet in the bar, things like signal strength support, dial-up/stupid mode(wvdial) and initiating the connection, as there isn't really much to do on Gnome's side to use/recognize the device, that is done by the drivers.

Err thank you w1z4d & chiskop for clearing that up , but ... What I ment by "Innovate, beg, borrow & steal." was ideas to make their ui more user friendly as I feel for a non i.t industry user its a tad confusing ... btw before you'll open fire upon me im a accounting student so im just curious about this. Why not make a common ui ? look what the symbian foundation is doing merging s60, uiq & moap(s) to a common ui. Likewise wouldn't that speed up development times of ubuntu & save them money ?

canonical makes the underlying os. the UI that ubuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu etc uses is created by a totally seperate project that has no links to canonical. so as a result canonical's time is not spent developing the UIs

See the other threads on user friendliness, it is highly dependent on what the user likes. Personal experiences indicate that a n00b to PC (afrikaans farmers) learn to use linux in the same time it would have taken me to teach them windows.
