Ubuntu to challenge Mac

Not that I really have a problem with what Shuttleworth is doing.. but I sometimes feel it's not really OSS as such, it's more like "charityware" or something.
I mean he is paying people to develop software. This is not how OSS normally works.

IBM doesnt sponsor RedHat?... Novell/Microsoft are not involved in SUSE? I was under the impression a large number of huge corporations have being sponsoring OSS for many years.

Then there is/was Corel Linux....

IBM owns RedHat and Novell owns SUSE....

For them to compete with apple is impossible. Ubuntu is a free OS and apple is an overpriced OS. I cannot see Ubuntu all of a sudden selling for some overpriced amount - so it ain't gonna happen.

That statement is based on the undisputable fact that apple products are overpriced and cheaper better alternatives can be had elsewhere. Come to think of it that way, perhaps this is a paradox which renders Ubuntu as the cheaper alternative... freaky.

Oh the same old garbage from you. Do you think it is possible to confine your ignorance to iPhone threads so the rest of us don't have to be subjected to it?

So just because you don't like what I am saying makes it garbage ? C'mon you can do better than that. Why not defend the overpriced rottenapplepie ?:p

If you had taken the time to actually look at the facts you would already know its garbage.

How about you go and configure a Dell machine on their US website with the exact same specs as an Apple machine and come and report back what you find. You may be surprised.

I did this on Dell's local site, building a Macbook Pro 17". Came up with the same price, give or take R1000. R28000!!

Verdict: The SA consumer is being ripped off. Period.

But then he wouldn't be able to troll Apple threads anymore.:)

Yeah. :(

How about I build my own machine as I have done so many times in the past ? You see, you need to put the custom back into customer and the pasion back into PC (Pasionate Computing) :p

Perhaps I should clarify my position when it comes to apple so that you, and others, can better understand what angle I am coming from. (perhaps to avoid some of my post all together )

Firstly - it is not about envy - I have made my computer and I am satisfied. I want nothing else (until it is time to upgrade 1 or 2 things).

The only thing I want with apple is to point fingers and laugh about it. Like pointing fingers at apple user with their little apple problems. (Just as linux users do at windows guys) Now correct me if I am wrong but apple folks all seem to believe that they are using a computer that Jebus would use. So then, why not ask the man himself come down from the clouds and fix your problems? Better yet, since your head is already in the clouds (typical apple user phenomenon) why not just give a shout out? ;)

Don't get me wrong though - my world would really be a litte more dull and boring if it was not for the Steves and their crack head inspired ingenious inventions. :)

So yes - I admit that some (or most) of my post relating to apple products should be taking with a hint of salt. Some of them should just be ignored if you ask me. But I am more than happy to be called names and being insulted about them, especially if it comes from real apple users ;) And for those that find them amusing - I am glad to be a source of smiles in your dialy routine. :p

So in other words you are just here to troll. How nice for you.

Why though should the rest of us have to put up with it?

I'm one of those linux guys that like to make fun of windows users. Quite enjoy it actually. Difference between you and me though, I can use better than most average users. How good are your apple skills?

Might brush up on them before you start pointing fingers? Voice of experience and all that...

way to go mark! thanks for your altruism.

i do agree with getting kids to use linux as a strategy - take a feather out of the macdonald cap.

though, since games are coming out on many platforms almost simultaneously these days, perhaps an effort to assist those gaming companies in porting those same games to linux would be more grass-roots?

It would help if someone would sort out OpenGL.

Why should we buy PC straight from Dell in the US ?

If you wish to make a valid comparison, such that your opinions have any actual weight then that is the criteria. I wouldn't expect you to understand.

Ah - ok - I understand (I think). Just because that is the only why you can get a computer I now have to use the same criteria so that we have a level playfield ? Perhaps you should zoom out a bit and see what I mean with alternatives. You can actually buy everything you need to make a decent PC locally - so there is no need to order it from Dell in the US.

That is the point of this article in a sense. They are trying to get Ubuntu, which is a cheaper and more freely avialable solution, to surpase the UI experience one would find on commercial products like MacOS and Windows.

Or am I still missing something here ?
