UCT Speed

when i was in smuts in 2002 i got up to 1mg per second after hours from overseas websites...while playing q3 at a ping of <50. that all stopped after a few months tho and we had to get creative...
 
At Helderberg College campus you can get about 4M in the late afternoon, haven't checked international yet.

Officially some of the most incompetent IT people I have every come across! They can't even get their email disclaimer to display correctly :(

But back to the speed issue - yes, dial-up is faster than what you get there - even if you're staff. I know some post-grads and researchers who write off entire days of work waiting for important software to download across the pathetic link.

IIRC they have the 3rd or 4th biggest pipe to TENET despite being the biggest Uni in SA...
 
lol some of us admin staff are also trying to get linux iso's..
the problem at Wits is the p2 they're running as a proxy server, it just can't handle the load, and most of CNS has unrestricted access to the net all the time so the farmyard porn sites start taking a hammering when those guys get to work.
of course there are ways around everything, and it is possible to get speed of 300kbyte/s at lunchtime, but i only do that with software i need urgently
