Uncapped ADSL for R159

good work indeed.

biggest score for me would still be a bump in linespeed, 384k just doesn't cut it anymore. not even @ R29/gb

I agree - I am so used to 4096k that anything slower is like too slow... I need at least 4096k uncapped but this can still work out costly....

If Telkom increase line speeds by bumping everyone up then wont that have an impact on all these deals. These deals are only good for 384k, so telkom will bump up the lines and no one will want to surf at 384k anymore.

The bottom line for decision making has to be service and whether the line speed actually meets expectation. There's no point in moving every time the wind changes direction for the next ISP who chops the price of their offering by R1. Let's rather look at their terms and conditions, up time, actual line speed and service, and then I'll make a move.

More good news, R100.00 for a 4MB (not for 384) line "uncapped" sounds about right to me. Seeing that SA is once again redefining the meaning of words / concepts this service should be priced at R100.00 pm in my opinion, so too all the other "uncapped" offerings.

For a true uncapped service based on a 4MB line, I would be willing to pay R 300.00 pm, but then it needs to be truly uncapped and unshaped.

Loving these price battles :D Imagine if there was this kind of competition amongst the members of the cellular cartel...

It think once your lines are bumped up you will have to pay more for the equivalent uncapped... So if this is going to be 10mb it could be double?

I have got a feeling this is going to be a perfect service for the mom and pop crowd, MEGA shaping for torrents etc. For those services you will have to stick to other ISP's

Listen, it is not what's on offer, it is the price imo. The public has been screwed for decades with high prices. "We are confident that we will have a uncapped service for under a R100 before the end of the month. Watch this space!" MyISP, is doing it right!
It's not really even the price that's got all these uncapped offerings going viral (though it's an important factor!).

It's about this:
“Where we find the uncapped services most suited are in households where parents often find that they can’t control their kids’ insatiable appetite for data - be it music and video downloads or games! Then during the month the account gets capped, leaving Mom and Dad without their e-mail and banking, which leads to high bills and tension in the household. Uncapped accounts are a solution in this environment”.

No-one likes to either get cut off, or get a nasty surprise at the end of a month when they get the bill for over-usage.

People want a fixed expense they can budget on.

for R 100 bucks a month it has to be cheap and nasty.
unless it is unlimited web browsing - makes me think of the blackberry internet service.

Even for R 159 a month the contention ratios must be heavily against the user - how can myisp come out with an offer like this when the big guns have gone within 20 bucks of the mweb offer.

This cannot be the REAL thing.

It is good that they are taking such a competitive stance. I think this will probably not be the best for heavy downloads, but this will really shake the market up.

How shaped would this service be?
I dont fully understand the technical / networking jargon, but wouldn't alot of people be sharing a limited allocation of bandwidth?
I'm not sure how to ask this in a better way.

EDIT: By the way - End of the Month is on Wednesday, 31 March.

The terminology you are looking for is contention ratio. Shaping refers to giving certain protocols priority over others. A similar concept is throttling, which has to do with limiting the speed of transfer across all protocols.

Very Nice MyISP - now lets see if you have good speeds or rubbish speeds (like screamer and digichilli crap)

I agree with McT - line quality is now an important factor, not uncapped, as now every good ISP sells uncapped....

BUT, I'm pretty sure the ISPs, or well, the Smart ISPs already know that - I mean look what happened to digichilly & screamer - yes they were cheap uncapped, but if its crap speeds people will move on.

Unless of course they are bargaining on a whole bunch of people taking up the offer, most of which use very limited (5-10GB) data in a month. These will then subsidise the heavy users.

All these offers are shaped, with no real details of the shaping. I think we need a standard program to perform a set of benchmarks for various ports, protocols, etc., using a standard range of servers. Then the ISPs can, of course, start tailoring towards the benchmarks :)

I think someone who signs up for one of these uber-cheap uncapped services and expects to do continuous YouTube, torrents, etc. is going to be bitterly disappointed. Hopefully MyBB or other sites can start digging into real comparisons of these offers.

I had an uncapped Uninet 128k service years ago, and, trust me, it was useless.

I think this is a brilliant idea. Can't one of the programming / development guru's on the forum set up a site for this? Something similar to speedtest.net, but testing a variety of protocols.

"We are confident that we will have a uncapped service for under a R100 before the end of the month. Watch this space!"

1. someone pleeeease tell me: were these guys making 100000% margins all along? why is it that they are all undercutting each other now, whereas they were content to just screw the customer all along. the complain has always been telkom, but now telkom hasnt even come to the party and we are seeing this?

2. this uncapped business for R100 must surely be dial-up. i see mtn also throttles its "uncapped" service to 128kbps. is 128 the new 386? talk about progress ... :o

The longer Telkom takes, the more mind-blowing their deal will have to be to cause any noticeable tremors. Here I refer to Telkom Internet specifically, not any line stuff. And then WA will have to come in with a sustainable earthquake to shatter the broadband arena.

Eyes Wide Open With Anticipation
