Uncapped ADSL: The solution for bandwidth hogs

A very short description of what a WUG is. It is a huge LAN. But instead of running cables between the computers, we link over wifi. And instead of everyone taking their PC to the same place your PC is at home.

Unfortunately connecting to a wug is not "simple", there is quite a bit to learn, so our Getting Started guide is a bit long, but it covers all of the steps needed to connect: http://wiki.ctwug.za.net/index.php/Getting_started

Come and chat with us on IRC if you want more info, you can find the IRC details on the www.ctwug.za.net page.

I looked at the option which sounded a bit technical. Left a message for help on the site with no response. Also spoke to someone already involved but was not helpful.

Gave it up as a bad idea!

I have a 4mb line and use approximately 30-50 Gigs of data per month @ 29/gig (or buy one get one free)With this bandwidth I have normally been able to:
Play BF:BC2, CS:S,Rappelz

Download Unlicensed anime and TV series episodes.

Since the traffic shaping has been put in place, I am not able to finish my purchased data.
So - now I will have to buy less bandwidth which in turn means less money for x and y supplier of bandwidth.

HOW can it be in their best interests to shape me then >?

In the same sentence I could have said I have uncapped and use to do the same amount of data per month, this would then in theory make me a hog (because I pay less for this service?)
I say deliver on your promises of uncapped bandwidth, with which I can do as I please.
OR take your uncapped and shove it or END the promises of it - because you clearly cannot provide the service levels I require as a daily internet user.

Hi GimmeMore. Please don't give up too quickly. Personally I know how busy the people on the wug can be. Leaving one message on a site then giving it up as a bad idea is a bit quick.

Did you join the IRC channel and chat with a few people? It can take days to really start talking with people, as not everyone is around all the time. I understand the huge learning curve faced by new members, and I really wish we could simplify it, but it is really not possible. It takes time and lots of dedication to begin to understand the way everything works together on a wug.

I have been connected and actively involved for over a year now and I still consider myself a Noob ;)

If the idea of a WUG appeals to you, then please spend some time and get involved, it is really very cool once you get going :D

share files
play games
stream radio
voip
learn about wireless networking
anything that can be done on TCP/IP as long as it is non-commercial

What exactly do people do on the wug is my question...

I spent the last two weeks researching different Quality of Service options. Busy playing with it, and I must say, loading a QoS rule on a live link is WAAAAY more fun than on a simulated link in a virtual machine :D

I long for the day when 50gb a month of data consumption doesn't label me a 'hog'. We might have limited bandwidth, but surely that will change over the following years with roll-outs of various infrastructure. That's where the fault lies, not with those consuming moderate amounts of data.

Once apon a time I lived in another country, I downloaded so much the ISP rated me the second highest in the country, one of my proudest achievements. :) My lastest is 120gig in 5 or 6 weeks.
I am sure i can do better than that.

Yes you can do better.
Discussed recently the cap issues in SA with friend from UK, he said that user on average do 500-750gig per month.

My friend in the UK just moved offices,he's now got 100Mbs Fibre, plus 8MB line at home for less than 20 pounds a month (R240) totally unshaped and uncapped. It brings tears to my eyes when tells me about the speeds he gets.

Everyone has a story like this... I'm starting to wonder if its the same friend that everyone knows.
The average linespeed for Residential broadband in the UK is 3mbit.

No no , my friend a totally real one. Promise!Every on got a story like this cause every one in the UK has flipping fast broadband, cause it cheap and affordable.

Right. Just like every one of you is a skinny, starving African kid with malaria and AIDS.

But now we're getting off topic.
Again, the average linespeed of a UK broadband connection is 3mbit/s according to a survey done last year (Can't for the life of me find a link to the survey... so feel free to ignore this information, as I'm sure you were planning to do).
They suffer from exactly the same problems that South Africa does, with bad copper line quality and high contention ratios.
Sure, they might have better competition, but it doesn't really matter when your line is only capable of syncing at 3mbit.

I also know people in the UK who have 20mbit ADSL connections, and they're in the minority.

Sure, there are ISPs like BE (https://www.bethere.co.uk/) Who are cheap (£22 to max your ADSL2+ at 24/3.5), but they still use BT's copper (BT is how the British pronounce Telkom)

well I can only speak on the behalf of the diaspora I know who's settled over there and from what I've seen everyone of them has uncapped between 2 - 8 Mbs

Well, it was bound to happen - bandwidth hogs. You always get a percentage of the population that will abuse the system. It is like someone coming off a strict diet, then they go to a restaurant where you pay a one off, and you can eat as much as you want. You will always get some that will make sure they "get their money's worth.....and more", by going back again and again to cram their face - and some will even take tuperware and load their tuperware full of the free food. Unfortunately, we have to be treated like children, and conditioned - that there is no reason to go ape over the resource, it will be there again next month, and the month thereafter. If an ISP has to throttle in order to save his business from collapsing due to hogs, then I support it. After all, business is business, and you need to do what you must do in order to stay in business. Once the feeding frenzy is over, I am sure Afrihost and other ISP's will loosen the rein a bit.

I hope they don't [loosen the reigns]
P2p and the thing they call bandwidth hogging is causing each and every user frustrations, not to mention the billions of rands of software/movie THEFT (being done by the same pricks who moan about crime in SA mind you).
So if I can get proper performance back on uncapped, then Ill support anti p2p rapage as far as I can...

unleashing p2p on my office network during office hour effectively kills our network all our network apps, browsing, email - Dead. you really have to throttle it or it will choke everything.
Thats why I don't mind them shaping the network a little as long as I can still access what I need.
