Uncapped ADSL: The solution for bandwidth hogs

im wary of wugs I must admit- if you could buy a kit and pay someone to install it then its a different story, but iv taken a look at these self setup pages and its like reading twilight- I just dont get it.....

I'm sooo sorry I was bandwidth hungry for so long... i just couldn't help myself

Really you didn't see this coming? SA the place where nothing is where it seems and where you shouldn't expect the obvious :D

+1 to wugs at least trying to help

Have to agree. The lower end people pay a higher price than the higher end people. And they get full line speed and trotted but we also get throttled, which is stupid cause we are paying for the high end users.

Article not mentioning an annual fee...

There are some points:
1) WUGs are not useful with specific content. For example: There is nice, rare non-English content over some international torrent [not English one]. It cannot be found anywhere on earth. Then WUGs cannot help here.
2) It is known, that content on torrents is not always legal. How will it be tolerated? (like some games, movies and audio)
3) How WUGs will download whole torrent data bases, which may take up several dozens of terabytes or more?

Not sure that is likely.

Just stop pirating...or prosecute people who pirate stuff. Traffic from home users would fall 90%. Why should we subsidise people who want to steal?

So it's a slow month for real news and analysis?

What's next? Doom and gloom World Cup predictions?

where can I find out more about WUGs, and especially info on how to connect to one?
In simple English. WUGs for Dummies

A very short description of what a WUG is. It is a huge LAN. But instead of running cables between the computers, we link over wifi. And instead of everyone taking their PC to the same place your PC is at home.

Unfortunately connecting to a wug is not "simple", there is quite a bit to learn, so our Getting Started guide is a bit long, but it covers all of the steps needed to connect: http://wiki.ctwug.za.net/index.php/Getting_started

Come and chat with us on IRC if you want more info, you can find the IRC details on the www.ctwug.za.net page.

It won't fall that far. There are still legal high-bandwidth content like steam and online shops. WUG also not helping here.

And in the same way, WUGs are not only about piracy. Not at all. It's misleading to think that way. So uncapped accounts are only useful for piracy too?

Anyone care to point out to me how a bandwidth hog can have a detrimental effect on a service that is shaped?

I think it's only JWUG or PTAWUG that has an annual fee and that's only because the members are trying their best to keep it up and running.

It's not theft, it's copyright infringement :p

If less people hogged, there'd be no shaping? :p ;) :D

Don't provide a product that cannot be sustained 100% all of the time, or at least be smart about how you are going to release this to the public.

ISPs like MWEB who does not throttle their accounts.

LOL

PTAWUG doesn't have an annual fee, but donations are appreciated.

Since I pay for an uncapped service, why cant I decide what I want to use it for...i.e. p2p, youtube, or whatever. The ISPs shouldn't then say uncapped, rather give the users a BIG cap eg. 30gb or 50gb. That way the users understand the concsequences of the out of bundle rates and that you will be throttled or pay a higher rate for extra bandwidth.
I hate the fact that they need to continue to debate the point, MWEB made a revolutionary step forward for SA and I applaud them and the rest of the market now want to add caveats to the whole uncapped service.

PS...Nice article. Enjoyed reading it:)
