Uncapped local ADSL bandwidth kicks in

what telkom should so is have 2 seperate accounts - one for international and one for local. international account would be [email protected] and the local account can be [email protected] or something like that. in that way, there's no need for having to use up international bandwidth just to make use of the uncapped local.
 
Totally uncapped local , but you pay for it w000p.
Its like giving a kid a candy shop but if he eats anything he pays for it.

Only Telkom could use the mentality.

What Crapkom should have is what we've been bitching about for some time now:
1. Free Local Bandwidth (Unshaped) - Yes free, since they charge for the ADSL Connection.
2. Reasonable International Bandwidth Charge: R10 per GB
3. One Price Max Speed ADSL connection: 4096 Kb/s R99pm

Enough said.:(

Simple answer - due to the fact that the Mega100 is NATing your connection and thus hiding from you the fact that you are actually using 2 completely separate internet connections. For Telkom to do that on their side they would have to add an extra router for every single customer which is not likely. The most efficient way to achieve this from everyone's POV is on your local adsl router - the tutorials are available... search function is your friend :D
 
Do they even need to route traffic differently? One would think that all they need is software that sets rules that IPs in this bucket are determined to be usage of this portion of the account.
 
Do I understand this correctly then?

Let's say I buy a 1GB local-only SAIX account. Can I then download more than 1GB without being capped?

More than 1GB local yes, the initial local still counts towards the international cap. That's how I understand it.

Just received this from WebAfrica after asking about local being uncapped:

"Hi

Thanks for your query, Firstly the bad news is that Telkom appears at this stage to be ready for "uncapped" local, however you still pay for each MB you download. It appears this is done to comply with the letter of the law (ICASA regulations) but not the spirit of it as consumers understand uncapped (IE fixed price for unlimited downloading). Thus it is unlikely that anything is going to change significantly in the near future with regards to this latest development. Unfortunately you would still be capped after reaching your limit."

But they haven't released the price/rate at which they charge for local after being capped so that really doesn't make sense.

If they charge you, just take them to court.

WebAfrica obviously cannot charge you for a prepaid local-only account, but they will still cap you as before when you have reached your limit.

This means that nothing has changed really.

Yeah but I'm referring to TI accounts, not WA prepaid accounts. :)

I don't get it. If you've paid for X amount of Gb's before it was "free and unlimited", how can they enforce a limit?
 
They cant charge you now at the 'Testing stages'. IMO on 1st of Decemeber they will start charging after they release the cost per meg/gig local.
 
Blame ICASA for the mess ....

Telkom is just doing what it does best, working the loop holes.

I think you misunderstood: If you pay for 1GB of local-only bandwidth from WebAfrica, that is what you will get, but you will still be capped after reaching your combined (up/down) limit as before.

So this only applies to Telkom Internet subscribers?

That sounds about right as we have come to expect this uncompettitive behaviour from Telkom.
