Uncapped local ADSL bandwidth kicks in

a 3Gig cap is a laugh a minute. 30Gig would be reasonable for local AND international. Or should we in SA have 'our own internet' because the rest of the world 'abuses' it?

Well... if local is free, maybe there's start being more locally hosted content, and thus making free local more worthwhile?
 
wrt to the following is: "Local bandwidth usage shall not be subject to the cap".

So Telkom did a dolphin dive through the above statement and now complies by not capping local access after the international cap has been reached. It's time to get knit-picky about the words in the statement if we are to turn this into our favour. Telkom and ICASA have come to some agreement on the meaning of the word 'cap'. I dont know what it is but I don't think it would bear any consequence on following reasoning. It seems as if we here in ZA are bringing a whole new meaning to the word. (If anybody knows what the agreed upon meaning of the word 'cap' is please elighten me.)

The other word of interest in the statement would be 'subject'. A big problem is that local bandwith still contributes towards the international cap. In that regard, Telkom is no longer in compliance with statement as local bandwith is still 'subject' to the cap in that it is contributing towards the cap. The inclusion of the word 'usage' actually helps further support this argument.

It seems as if we are heading down a road which leads to being billed entirely seperately for local and international bandwith with local being uncapped. If local bandwith does not contribute towards the cap then Telkom would have to distinguish between local and international traffic for each subscription, set a cap for international bandwith and an upper limit for local bandwith. Once the upper limit for local bandwith is reached any usage thereafter will be billable. The type of subscription would define the international cap and local upper limit.
 
Well said psivius, but screw the idea of them still wanting to charge us for it.

Shake@work - the regs never said that local will be free. Just that it should not count towards the cap.
 
that R70 should be covered by the ADSL line rental at the very least.

This will be great for local server gaming and if you download from SAIX game service, and other companies could start hosting legal file servers.

If it stays like this it will have a great impact on local usage and development.

For the first time in a long while I am actually feeling positive!
 
I have just spoken to my service provider Imaginet and there technical staff are not yet informed about how this will impact their offerings.

As off this phone call they are still counting local bandwidth towards your total cap.

Well will wait and see how they approach it.

It would really be great if I can game and download on Saix and only play for LOTRO international downloading.

I am sending up a prayer, "Telkom please for once in your life give something back to the Internet community, AMEN"
