Zulu is the most spoken language in the country but a high number of people speak Afrikaans and English as a second language, so it's a tricky situation and there's no way you are a going to make everyone happy and still be cost effective

My opinion:
I wish just one university would be Afrikaans only, make the rest English, it would be representative of the "National Demographic" that the ANC loves, slowly phase out any government funding. Let the people who want to be there (and university through its patents and such) finance it. If it becomes a pocket of excellence, so be it. If it crumbles, so be it.
 
I am enormously proud as an old Tukkies to see these guys stand up for their university, my sister is still at varsity and basically the kids all made a chain, the EFF couldnt do anything. This is not about language, it is about standing up to the thuggery that we saw at UCT and it isnt going to happen at Tuks.

As opposed to singing Sarie Marie they should have sung Bobejaan klim die berg.

That is not true and has been proven false year in and out again. What you are saying if scientifically incorrect. It is better to have fundamentals been explained to you in your mother tongue. I am pretty sure the Germans, French, Swedes; Japanese and Chinese would love to hear why their educational approach is wrong.

That is exactly what will happen.
The "majority" will keep on destroying the established universities.
The "colonialists" will build private universities and pay for it at astronomic amounts of their own money or go overseas and study there.

Problem solved. The majority will have all the uni's with all the colonialists gone. Then as that living brain donor Wits woman said:"We must have African universities for Africans and run in a African way."

Viva Africans.
Just a pity they will have to study colonial science. There no such thing as african science.

The texts used in afrikaans universities in the sciences are English so there is no afrikaans science either. All they do is teach the subjects in English don't see what advantage it affords the students. It'd be easier and cheaper to simply teach in the language of the content.

no one is asking for a total Afrikaans education without any English whatsoever. Some Texts at Tuks ere in Afrikaans when I was there, but yes the textbooks were often in English.

I was only wondering at the illogic of teaching English based content in afrikaans.
 
You know what boggles my mind, why we don't build zulu/xhosa or other African language universities? So what if they learn engineering in zulu, they would have a better understanding and as long as they can communicate in English then fine. More access to education would be created instead of trying to "fix" the already working unis. Oh wait it's zumas government and education doesn't fill his pockets.

It only sounds illogical until you have some first hand experience. For many subjects it does not matter, but then something like calculus comes along. When I got to university I found that the English calculus lectures fit my schedule much better, so I went. That was this a mistake. I quickly released that having your foundation knowledge in Afrikaans and then trying something more advanced in a different subject was not fun. Yes the textbook was still English but first sitting in an Afrikaans lecture helped bridge the gap so that the text book made sense.

Because all the engineering textbooks are written overseas and are in English...
