No, taxes and medical aid contributions, both of which I contribute to, get pooled into a big fund, so that sick people can receive treatments that they otherwise would not be able to afford.

Those who oppose social spending should, on principle, withdraw from medical aid schemes, insurance products, etc.

I think that you're misrepresenting the situation. The question is, why can't the US have social healthcare like most industrialised nations? No-one is saying that Americans must hand over all their money to their government.

In some sense, Americans are worse off than South Africans in this regard. In South Africa, a person without medical aid and unable to afford private treatment can receive treatment in a state hospital, whereas, to my knowledge, there is no analogue to a state hospital in America.
