USB Modem Power Issues / USB Extensions

Windows 7 had problems, but not similar to yours. Return this modem, if it was second-hand, it was for the reason. Get money back, not a replacement, then you have couple options around.

Something weird has just happened. I realised that the modem was get extremely hot just after 2 minutes of use, so I got one of those ice block cooler things and placed it beneath the modem surprisingly the modem has been running non stop for the past 30minutes. Can heat make the modem disconnect like that?
 
Yip, it has a sensor. It will disconnect when overheating. Actually tripping temperature is high, it will perhaps burn your fingers. If it doesn't, I can say, the sensor is faulty. Return modem to the seller.
 
Thank you for the help. I'm going to return the modem later today and explain to him the problems I have been experiencing. I hope the shop owner doesn't give me a hassle about returning the product.
