Vista Support

Cool, are you upgrading to Iam3G v1.2 or the new, still buggy, Iam3G v2.0? What new features can we expect in the new, improved Iam3G? :)

Unfortunately the still buggy version v2.0 :( Need to do some more beta testing...

As for the features, wait till the final product is released :p

If it is the E220 then I don't think it is necessarily a virus - it sounds more like the original installation was not successfully completed for some reason and has been trying to continue when logging into Windoze...To clarify, I assume it is the Huawei E220 USB HSDPA modem that you are referring to and not a cellphone used as a modem and attached via USB to a PC?

Have you tried the Advanced mode in Spybot-S&D to find out why it is automatically running when logging into Windoze [following a reboot]?
Sorry - to clarify it is a new Huawei E220 USB HSDPA, they suggested that I install version 9.1 (may be incorrect but cd is not with me). Once vista started I get asked if I would like to install the modem, although the modem is not plugged in. Even if I respond by saying no, I just need to plug the USB plug in to connect without any problem. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated

I never had to do any of that manually, I suggest trying the following on a Windoze heXPee PC:
  1. Download and flash the E220 with the latest VMC-Lite version [currently "Flash Software - VMC Lite 2.2.2.1.zip"]...
  2. Then try the E220 that has just been flashed, in Vista, it should auto-install without any problems.
You could also try the latest Huawei Mobile Partner s/w version [previously known as Huawei Mobile Connect].

I tried this for the very first time the other day. No difference what so ever. It installs the USB Mass Storage Device, and the CD-ROM. Prompts to install the software, but it DOES NOT install the PC UI Interface and 3G Modem drivers. I had to once again use the workaround for Vista.

Ok, that's great, but what happened between those 2 posts?

This is what happened...

V3G told me to update the E220 to the VMCLite 2.2.2.1 version and that after that it would install all the drivers and that i wouldnt have to use the workaround to get it working.

becoz i never tried that, i gave it a go with a customer yesterday that came in with Vista. I HAD TO use the workaround again. So that solution fell throught the mat for me.

Just now i had a customer, with Vista, and i thought... You know Garth, just try it. If it breaks, jou skuld. So what i did was i updated the modem with the Mobile Partner software, and bobs your uncle! Everything installed smoothly :) i did get a BSOD so i had a hell se skrik too lol.

Now i see what confuses you ic... theres a post of me being frustrated the i have to use the workaround, and then theres a post of me that i dont have to use the workaround anymore. The post that was supposed to be between that i had posted in the thread of the new E220 software, as it was not just related to Vista, but related to the new software... sorry about that :D

Ok. Smooth Sailing in Vista from here on out. Theres just one tiny little itsy bit of a problem i seem to have noticed...

Once everything is done on Vista(Just after the drivers are installed), Windows seems to remove the "Safely remove Hardware" function.

What i want to know is, what process that function is linked to and how can i get it back?

Why it dissapears like that?

Is there any other way to remove the modem safely without that function(In Vista)?

And what implications in future can customers have for having excesivley plugged there modem out like that without safely removing it?

I have to admit me and most of my collegues I work with hardly ever use this function. Not entirely sure how to get it back but even Linux is robust enough lately to handle the immediate removal of a USB device.

I never use it and have not once had a problem with just ripping out (or plugging in) a USB or PCMCIA device.

Last time I used it must've been with '98.

That's good to hear. But that's Linux. And this is Windows. And Windows always finds someway to screw you over with something. Especially when you least expect it.

Is it just for the E220 or any USB device?

Just the E220.

What i want to know is what exaclty could happen to a USB device is it isnt removed safely and why is it like that?

Not really to protect the USB device, more to let the OS know the device is off-line.

@ic, They call it 'Plug & Play', so I treat it as such. If not they should have called it "Plug, click 'remove safely' & Play" or something to that effect.

Maybe my notebook(s) are just well built but I've never had any problems on XP or Vista.

Actually I was referring to Windows in my response. I only mentioned Linux because I recently noticed it doesn't even have the option to safely remove apart from possibly unmounting the device which happens automatically.

In both WinXP and Vista you can fairly safely just unplug without to much issues. Win98 and 2000 tends to be a bit more tricky. However when just pulling out a USB drive always make sure it has completed writing the file and the read lights aren't on.

Generally WinXP and Vista is pretty stable in this regard unless there is a faulty USB driver sitting somewhere. The same rule seems to apply to the Express and PCMCIA cards for both these OS's.

What i want to know is what exactly could happen to a USB device is it isnt removed safely and why is it like that?

I once pulled an external disk (USB attached) out of an XP notebook and managed to mess up the file system. Since then I always use the safely remove hardware app.

What I have noticed with Vista is that they now optimize devices for quick removal or performance. If it is optimized for removal you do not have to use the safely remove hardware app. (To see this stick a flash disk in. In explorer right click the device | properties | hardware | select it again | properties | polices).

I am however less fussed with flash disks than external disks (i.e. hard disk in drive caddy). So I would just pull out the E220 if it came to that :)

Just today I stumbled upon this:

http://www.vodafone.co.nz/personal/plans-services/3G-broadband/vista-support.jsp

Version 9.1.2.5766

Option Colt finally supported.
That means finally all my hardware works under Vista....and I almost gave up :D

Edit: It says nowhere on the site, but I believe I saw somewhere it adds support for 64 bit Windows for some cards...I may be mistaken though.

This has been available on the Vodacom site since a month ago. I posted it here back then and yes the Colt works in both 32bit and 64bit versions of Vista. Look further down this thread for details.

What I have noticed with Vista is that they now optimize devices for quick removal or performance. If it is optimized for removal you do not have to use the safely remove hardware app.

This is available on XP as well. Right click on a drive. Choose the Hardware Tab. Then select any of your drives and push the properties button. In the second tab "Policies" you can change a drive from Performance to Quick Removal.
