Just received a nasty surprise, usage on a modem installed in a remote location, ZAR 213,000.00 for the month of Jan !!!

I know there are the T&C's that we all accept however surely it must get capped for financial reasons at some stage ? Its obvious that the modem is working well and HSDPA is at its best.

Can anybody offer any advise ?

R213k? Geez,

What was it downloading, what was it connected to, who has access to it?

Thanks for the quick reply, will PM you the number.

To answer your questions:

1. Nope, no wifi - was a cctv system set to stream the video feed and some information - multiple errors with the setup, settings etc. I have subsequently corrected this.
2. Went the contract route as we have a corporate agreement with Vodacom and didn't want to suffer the risk of downtime and admin associated with prepaid (lessons learnt here)

Many lessons learnt and some have already been put in place..

slowly dragging myself off the floor here..

In terms of the National credit act you need to be able to afford any credit, which in this case many wont so is it not possible to crawl out that way because they are giving credit un-affordable by the lender?
Just a point to consider.

It was uploading data, connected to a surveillance system which was streaming video feeds and other information to an off-site location.

Access to both the physical sim, login info and traffic routing is strictly controlled and I don't suspect foul play, I've seen the detailed billing and it shows the usage, waiting to get more detailed billing possibly showing the traffic information, IP addresses etc.

Awaiting further info to confirm the traffic was legit.

Correct on the second point, was installed in an off-site surveillance system

Looking into it now, if this was a continuous connection there is no way of stopping the line as the billing system will not update until the internet connection is terminated.

P.S am still baffled by how much this account has gone OOB on CCTV steaming only.

You get data on TopUp with Vodacom, no need to go prepaid. I did this last year as I needed 3G for our small business and also wanted our clients to connect to our WiFi (a lot of them sit next door at a coffee shop and still use our internet).

I got my 2GB TopUp for the same price as postpaid contract last year and I understand its a small extra fee (think R15) to take a postpaid data contract as a TopUp option since then. You do loose free night owl bandwidth but for the peace of mind, its worth it.

This is not credit, its a service. Its the same as me leaving my water taps at home on for the entire month, or using my electricity to the max and then blaming the municipality for not stopping my usage.

you missed the proposed bill so this figure is way higher, attending to it now.
