Vodacom Mobile security concerns

Have not used the Mobile Web platform at all since they did this. Only data I am using is to check my Gmail through the Gmail Java app. I refuse to play to Vodacom's rules... what happened to Net Neutrality?... this issue is a serious infraction of that principle.

When last did you test? We specifically addressed your concern as soon as you raised it last week.

every website using my nokia e90 is now fragmented. the question is: what bright spark came up with this junk?

rpm alerted us to this issue yesterday afternoon and since then a whole team tested this extensively (with the limited information in the press release).

I, myself, spent most of last night with various handsets and webmail sites and could not reproduce the problem at all.

So, if anyone get it right please let me know.

It's not the technical issue. It is the principle.

What or who gave Vodacom the right to "interpret", "modify" or "improve" the Internet for us? We never asked for this. We were never given an option in this. Can you imagine the outcry if Telkom decided to put a "helpful" banner on every web page that passes through its servers? At the very least this should have been made optional and with forewarning. It was poorly executed and badly communicated. And Vodacom deserves to take a revenue hit because of it.

Don't disagree with you (except on the "communicated" bit; it was not "communicated" at all ).

But what's as important is that there is not a head-in-the-sand, 'f@k voort' attitude around this. As per usual, every bit of feedback we got from this (and other users groups) was taken and carefully considered. And many of them are already implemented or are being implemented.

We could have just carried on and ignored feedback, but as you'll know, this has never been the policy when it comes to data products. The day we launched 3G, we were on this forum soliciting feedback. And actually using that feedback.

We, for sure, learned a few thing with this CA thing and hopefully will remember them well. But we can probably carry on with the discussion in the relevant thread.

v3g - this should never have just been implemented. it should have been advertised and if people wanted this, they could have the settings sent to their phone.

I hear what you are saying V3G, but I think people are just waiting for Vodacom to take it all out of the way. Make it an optional proxy. Make it opt-in, rather than force it on people without their permission. The communication part should be Vodacom's responsibility... let them advertise it via their media and their magazine. Or release it in the form of an app like Opera Mini. There are just too many other variables for this to ever work successfully. We are not giving Vodacom feedback so they can improve on it... we just want them to get rid of it. Please!

Gary, I think the important thing to realise here is who the 'we' are in your post.

While the vast majority of the people on this forum are included in the 'we', it's still a much smaller % of the total handset base that can use this service.

So while you want to get rid of it, we are getting very positive user responses coming back.

The right answer would have been to have an Opt-out option from day 1 and we're building it. Until then, most handsets (if not all) that don't need CA have it turned off, i.e. you ARE rid of it.

That's why I asked to test again with the proxy. Basically we did turn it off for handsets where it stuffed up the browsing. And if we ever put it back, it will be well communicated and with an Opt-out option.

Of course they won't hahahahaha

To be quite honest, you're completely out of your depth here.

I know you stated before you can run a Telco (with half a brain cell) but one of the things any responsible company do is not to fire from the hip when it comes to issuing press statements. I would suspect as a CEO-in-waiting (having handled a R100M in the past), you'd understand this.

The facts are: rpm alerted us to the IS statement late yesterday afternoon, asking feedback, and we could not reproduce it in testing. I phoned the person mentioned in the press release at IS this morning and he was not available to speak to me till this afternoon at 3PM.

We obviously wanted to make sure we understand what IS stated, so did not want to publish a he-said / she-said response. Thus we could not give rpm any feedback before his going-to-press time.

BTW, we have managed to speak to IS in the mean-time, and although we better understand how they tested, still can't reproduce it.

OK fair enough. I have said enough, let it stand that there are many of us on here with a little bit of tech savvy who think it was unfair for this to be foisted on us the way it was. That much you have already agree with and I'll leave it at that. Now we should just vote with our feet if we so wish. Thanks for your tireless efforts at communication though! ;) At least Vodacom has done that for us!
