Still the same issue today ...

I'm trying to do a window update but can't access http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

Ping results for update.microsoft.com

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\UtianG>ping -t update.microsoft.com

Pinging update.microsoft.com.nsatc.net [65.55.200.157] with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 65.55.200.157:
Packets: Sent = 30, Received = 0, Lost = 30 (100% loss),

Once again, when I connect via my work network, everything works fine.

V3G Please assist.

Just an update to whoever is experiencing the same issue.

Still the same problems since Monday.

Seems like it's a 3G/HSDPA problem only. When I connect via EDGE, everything works fine albeit VREK slow ..

I've just tried on Vodacom and Neotel and get no response on either. Maybe update.microsoft.com just doesn't respond to pings?

This, however, works just fine on Vodacom:
ping www.ubuntu.com

I was about to say vodacom 3G is not utter total entire rubbish... until tonight.

Earlier this week I got pings of 315ms - 340ms (yes, that is not a typo, that is awesome) but tonight I get 3500ms - 5000ms.

Goes to show, the vodacom network just cannot keep up.

Sorry vodacom, I gave up on you. I applied for a telscum line so I can use ADSL :(

I think we have a specific setup for Windows Update, which is BY FAR the top talker on our network.

:confused::confused::confused::confused:

OK this is the weirdest thing I've ever encountered.
Since I've been using my HTC Touch Diamond as a modem via USB i decided to give the bluetooth connection a go. And surprise surprise, http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us opens just fine. I can run an update and everything seems fine.

Ping update.microsoft.com was still producing 100% timeouts.

Then I switched back to USB connection and retried the update.microsoft.com ..... NOTHING HAPPENING

Can you guys access the site even though you getting the timeouts?

This started happening Monday morning.

I'm confused and very frustrated since it's affecting other websites as well. www.news24.com opens but it's like it doesnt complete loading the site. The "Transferring data from m1.2mdn.net..." message at the bottom of my browser (Firefox 3.0.4) doesnt disappear ... i.e. it's never "Done" loading the page.

www.iol.co.za loads fine but gets stuck on "Transferring data from www.iol.co.za..." at the bottom left corner of the browser.

I dont know what else to check ...

:confused::confused::confused::confused:

I'm sitting with zero throughput at the moment ...

I'm connected at 3G+ - I can ping ... but I can't access any websites - I keep getting page not found or connection interrupted errors - At the moment I'm in Woodstock, Cape Town.

Are we having any network issues over here?

Update on my [update.microsoft.com] problems

Hey all,

Just thought I'd share this with you.

After endless hours of investigation, it seems like my problems connecting to update.microsoft.com as well as other sites were related to my HTC Touch Diamond's USB connection ... should have realised this earlier because when I switched to bluetooth internet sharing on my phone, everything worked fine.

I've also tested it with my Novatel MC950D this morning and everything works like a dream ... well the normal Vodacom 3G dream that is ... so it's definately the diamond's USB connection.

So i guess I will be using the bluetooth connection for the time being until I've used up all my data on that sim .... and then start using the Novatel again ...

Do you guys know if one can transfer data from one sim to another?

I'm in the Durban area too (asherville) and noticed that as of yesterday things seem a bit slower than normal. Things seem a bit improbed today.

Kloof area of Durban, same problem! Had fantastic speeds up until about two days ago, then someone flicked the switch to the off position, and 3.6 HSDPA is turned down to 6Kb/s maximum for the last two days........making e..v..e..r..y........................w...e....b.........p....a.....g...e.................t.....a....k....e.....f......o.....r......e.....v.....e.....r.....to.......l.....o.....a.....d...............

Another Update

So i guess I will be using the bluetooth connection for the time being until I've used up all my data on that sim .... and then start using the Novatel again ...

Do you guys know if one can transfer data from one sim to another?

All of a sudden USB connection is working fine again .... nothing changed on my HTC Touch Diamond .... Bluetooth also still working fine ...

Getting excellent speeds on http://speed.vodacom.co.za/speedtest/:
Download Speed: 1864 kbps (233 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 323 kbps (40.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

This now leads me to believe that my problems were not related to my phone's USB connection ... must have been some network bug which was sorted out by Vodacom.

This has been one of the weirdest / most frustrating weeks on the Vodacom 3G/HSDPA network.

Hopefully all has been resolved now .... HTC Touch Wood

Whoever fixed it, THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!!

Vodacom stays unreliable - if you need a reliable connection this one is not for you. Had it for about 2 years now - would have thought teething problems would be sorted out.

It typically drops for a minute every 10 minutes or so. Some sites (like Dell) does not pick up a download manager if you want to download a driver - makes it a nightmare and you loose 100's of megs. Probably a way around that, but I need a reliable connection and Vodacom is not.

Yup ... whenever I'm at home and want to use it, it's down. Taken me about 50 minutes to log in and post this from my phone.

And the excuse will be overcrowding of the tower / my location / power went down / unfortunate lightning strike etc

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh!!! Now thats better:

Last Result:

Download Speed: 2220 kbps (277.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1057 kbps (132.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

PLEASE leave that switch in the ON position! ;)
