Frequent disconnects today!

Just thought I'd share this. Since this morning i've been disconnected from the network every +-10min. non stop since 09h30 ...
When I am connected, everything seems fine, no timeouts, download speed of +- 1886kbps which is normal ... but then it disconnects ...

Don't know whats going on ...

Anyway, thats just my luck with Vodacom 3G/HSDPA.

hmmmmm

on 3g

telnet smtp.vodacom.co.za 25 =
220 ******************************

can't send anything

on adsl

telnet smtp.vodacom.co.za 25 =
220 Welcome to smtp7.vodamail.co.za ESMTP

obviously can't relay via adsl - but telnet works.

Looks like GPRS/EDGE numbers?

Can you check if your phone shows 3G when you do the tests?

If not, and you're on EDGE there's probably a 3G coverage issue which seems to agree with your experience and symptoms.

Hi Guys.
I need some help with my connection. Below i my test that I have done and the results, but my problem is that after being online for a few minutes, my connection either get dropped or is stop responding. i am in the Northcliff - Albertsville area and this is now ongoing since the beginning of January 2009. I have reported it, but so far I received not reply from Vodacom at all.

Also I am having a problem with the vodacom4me e-mail account. Friends of mine send me e-mail on both my vodacom account and MSN messenger account, but for some reason I do not get my mail on vodacom4me. I did report this ont the vodacom4me site and received and an automated response, but the problem is, when I look at my e-mail, this e-mail from them was in my spam directory on vodacom4me. How is it possible that vodacom4me e-mail see e-mails send from vodacom as spam!!!!

Some of my clients from overseas that I have chat with on messenger told me that they have send mail to my vodacom mailing address, but only about 4% of them I received. This have shown me that vodacom's e-mail can't be trusted.

How is it possible that such a big company can not supply us users with a proper e-mail service that we can rely on.

Solid performance from 3G HSDPA + UPA last night in bluff area.

I don't know what happened but it was great!

And thats no joke guys ... LOL

Was speaking to the local guys about your situation and the general consensus is you have an uncanning knack to attract bad throughput. At home, at work, even when you visit in Worchester, low throughput and disconects seem to follow you.

Not sure if it's bad Karma, but if we can't fix it, we might ask you to use a yellow sim so the horrible performance can follow you there! :D

I know the guys did look at your home/work situation a while ago. Did anything come from that?

Apologies for that. Will ask the guys to restore 'normal' service. ;)

I haven't had any feedback, but seems better than it was a couple of weeks ago. There are the odd days when its really bad but then its not just me ...

I've learned to live with it .... and there's no way I will switch to that yellow sim... hehehe - so yeah.. u will definitely see the odd complaint from me on this forum. Hope its ok with you - LOL

Same here - i really can't complain about my time with VC, but since Jan i've been suffering constant disconnects or it simply stops responding. Only a reboot fixes, but it's a very temporary fix as it could easily happen within the next 5 minutes of being online again. Rinse and repeat process.

The fact that a reboot fixes this wants to point to the PC-side of your setup.

What modem / dashboard do you use?

Try the following:

K. This is what I came up with at lunch.

A simple little batch file as follows:
Code:
cd\
:start
ping -n 1 -l 1000 google.co.za
ping -n 2 127.0.0.1
goto start

What this does is send 1000 bytes to google (testing revealed that pinging at 940 bytes was sufficient to keep the HSDPA Link open). Then, purely to minimise bandwidth usage, I put in 2 pings to your local machine (This seems to be the most you can do before the HSDPA Link breaks from non-throughput)

These 3 pings run in an infinite loop - so remember to close the thing down, should you try it. I'm guessing the numbers may need to change for different people in different situations. If you're still switching to 3g, try removing the "ping -n 2 127.0.0.1" line. If you're still switching after that, try incrementally increasing the "1000". (1024 = 1kb)

My rough calculations put this batch's usage at around 3mb/hour. It could be a complete failure - I'm going to try gaming with it tonight, and will report back tomorrow.

If the problem is solved by reboot definitely an software problem. @Kerrang, are you using Vista? I've had the same issue on both HSDPA and ADSL (connecting wirelessly) on my Vista laptop.

EDGE/GPRS + 3G/HSDPA completely dead here in bloem. V3G, have you maybe heard of any reports? Did somebody's tractor plow a fibre cable? :p

Langebaan

We have been experiencing problems in Langebaan for the past two months and the past week it is exceptionally bad. I spend 50% of my day trying to get anything to happen.

I always have 3 Bar signal apparently coming from the Mykanos tower.
I use a Huawei 3G USB modem and at the moment use a Payasyougo with number 0727020854

The thing works and all of the sudden there is just no data transfer even though it is still connected. Sometimes it switch to 2G when this happens and sometimes it just remains on 3G

Some bright spark from Vodacom told me to put the modem on 3G only instead of 3G preferred. His reasoning was that then it will stop jumping from 3G to 2G. But all that is happening when I do that is that if 3G leaves us there is nothing left and then we have absolutely no data transfer where when it switch to 2G there is at least something although slower than a 1971 telkom dial up

O ja, I use Windows XP and I did upgrade the modems software, I rebooted a hundreds times to try and solve the issue and I have unplugged the modem and plugged it back in a million times.

If there are any new tricks to try and prove the problem on the client's side I will be happy to try it.

Started working again at some point in the afternoon. Was weird to have a complete outage though.
