Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

I'm not having any problems speed-wise, but every now and again the network just vanishes - I'm in the Bothasig area. Everything will be hopping along, and then suddenly the network's gone ... I'm still connected (apparently) but the client says "Network not available"

Im having a prob with my connection, I have a 3G/HSDPA modem and i purchase a 2GB data bundle every month... I mainly play online games and for a while now I get really bad down speeds during the week up until late friday night, then smooth sailing on the weekend and back to rubbish on sunday evening... Anybody have any idea?

...and some more disconnects. That's about 170mb of my 1gb bundle down the tubes so far tonight in interrupted downloads (site does not support resume) and uploads to youtube. <sigh>

Many things tend to 'dissapear' in Bothasig! :)

Which modem/phone is this?

Maybe check with Eric if they're swapping towers. Might well be.

What, randomly moving the Century City tower to Bothasig and back? :(

Should I send him the bill?

Oh, BTW I have moved over to contract. Work has ported to Vodacom so it made sense for me to add a bundle to the voice contract and then slap datasims onto it so I can share data between my phone, router and notebook.

Are you getting DNS's timeouts? Which server?
Yup, 196.207.40.167 and 196.207.40.165.

Update:
>nslookup mybroadband.co.za
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.

^ Undocumented feature.

They swapped the tower that serves me from Siemens to Alcatel last week, so they might still be active in the area. Will check.

Very cool undocumented feature. Just waiting for delayed billing to bit me.

Ah. I suspect you at least had some warning (i.e. you had to let them into the house) ;)

If there is planned maintenance and this is going to be disruptive is a sticky with rough time lines too much to ask?

When they switched the site I connect to (Panorama Hospital) there were no disruptions I could see, so it's supposed to be (near) seamless.

I'm battling to browse, you seeing the same?

lol ... I'll agree with that ... but it's not cool when I'm doing uploads or downloads.

I'm using the E220 - I know it's not the modem because I have not problems in town or in Table View - its only when I'm at home in Bothasig that I've been having issues lately.

Are you there now? If so, what throughput do you get? I'm batting to browse and I'm just up the road. But I'm not sure if it's not just something on my side.

Still no joy for me ... frequent disconnects (every 10 to 30min) the entire morning ...

*SIGH*

WHAT IS GOING ON??

:(:(:(:(:(:(

No - I'm in town now - I'll only be back home tonight after 6.

Here are my current figures though from speedtest.net

Server: Johannesburg
Download 1806kb/s
Upload 39kb/s
Ping 302ms

If you were wondering if the upload speed was a mistype ... its not - it really was 39kb/s ... thats a BIG gap.

I thought you had a mini site in your house (or is that top secret?). So if they were doing upgrades then it might not be as seamless as hoped or there is some issue again. Looking at the time it does smack of the "post 8pm hello weekender minutes" theory.

I gave up and went to bed shortly after my last post. Besides for the disconnects up till that point browsing was fine.
