I got 619 errors for the first time today while trying to re-connect to HSDPA. On GPRS now.

I am happy I am not the only person either, but very sad that it's affecting so many - and you know what's even worse. Most people are okay with this in South Africa.

Its a bunch of cr@p! and everyone is getting used to it :(

20:25 pm all 3 apn's on Vodacom are dead. 619 errors across the board. Managed to log onto the forum through GPRS from my phone. Phoned 155 "We are experiencing problems ... blah blah" .... like I did not know that. I wonder if V3G even has connectivity tonight ... he is rather silent. I would really like to know what happened at 2:28pm today because that is when this all started, I am very active on my sites and servers so I noticed immediately when it started occurring. Seems like some major screw up happened today. Many many unhappy customers tonight.

Sorry, was stuck in a meeting that just finished. Don't think anything specific happened at around 2pm today. Sounds like the network just broke earlier than 'normal'.

I see many of you complaining about speed and latency, but am I the only one with major issues? I connect and can visit pages for about 3-5 minutes - after that point every page says 'not available' and I need to disconnect and reconnect

I have had enough. Today was the last straw. This month has been the biggest waste of R300 I have ever had. Thought I would try a VC 1GB PPDB as an alternative to ADSL at my new place probably moving to 2GB+ if it worked out fine. It took me 3 days before I buckled and ordered ADSL at the new place. I run a business through the internet and if I had to go through the hell that this month has been again, I would rather just leave SA.

There is no way I could recommend that anyone use VC for data. In fact, I will be actively recommending people avoid VC. Most days I have in the region of 50 disconnections. More the 50% of the time when I connect, I can do nothing with the connection. A friend was going to get a VC account on which they would probably spend between R150 and R300 on usage every month (maybe more but he is not a big user). I have advised him to rather go with MTN or VM.

so as soon as Vodacom manages to find a way of squeezing Telkodemonopolies-SAIX's nuts, and getting the capacity upgrades that Vodacom has demanded from SAIX, we should see the network stabilising.

I have no problem with speed once I get connected. I think the international speed problem probably only felt in a big way by 30% of the people. The other 70% are screaming because capacity problem on VC's side. They have too many users and their systems are just not handling. 619's, Temporary Network Problems, intermittant disconnections, dead connections and just simply being unable to connect for hours on end is a much bigger issue IMO.

If its a capacity problem on VC's side, then I'm even more PO'ed! IMO a capacity problem doesn't just suddenly occur, it gradually builds up. So either nobody at VC even noticed, or they just didnt give a ****. So which is it?

I get the feeling that the marketing guys had a great idea (which was a great idea). Problem is they should have prepared before unleashing the great idea. I am sure MTN initiated the VC move when they announced their 2GB special. VC were probably not ready for it but had to go along and get something out there quick.

IC, you are on a 4U contract if I remember correctly. Do you have any of the connection problems experienced by the Pre-paid guys (gals?)?

Hi V3G, yeah something sure broke. Any news on this? Stuck with very slow GPRS at the moment and still cannot seem to get a 3G connection on any of the 3 Apn's. Now 1:24 am and I am off to bed ... hope to see 3G in the morning.

@Abe, ic now uses a PPDB and not the 4u contract. The main reason is having better control over oob with the prepaid system.

@ IC - I get intermittend connection problems where i have to reconnect to get ANY throughput. I have noticed however that while Im busy downloading something, that link stays open....even though I can't access any sites or services. I get the feeling that vodacom limits the amount of outgoing connections. I'm not sure if that is the case, but it sure looks like it at times. What I meant by capacity problems is that IF our connections are suffering because of too many users on the network, then I feel that Vodacom is entirely to blame as this does'nt just happen. They must have seen this coming in one way or another. Surely they should know how many user they can have on their network before it starts to fall down? I think this is what ticks most people off. If it's because of SAIX's international link, then local sites should'nt be affected at all, or is that a stupid assumption to make? Please keep in mind that I'm not attacking anybody with my posts. I'm just frustrated because I have had excellent throughput most of the time, and now that I suddenly get a sh!tty link, I cant get anything done! I think I've come to rely on Vodacom too much.

I think that with MTN delaying their new pricing a lot more subscribers than Vodacom anticipated, have moved over to Vodacom for data. Their planned network upgrades were therefore still insufficient to cope and therefore we are experiencing a significantly higher number of complaints about the same issues around the country.

Anyone else have that this afternoon?

I've also had similar problems over the last few days --> if I leave the connection idle for a few minutes while reading something, it withers requiring a re-connect to get bi-directonal data flow working again:(

I was seeing that as well last night from 19:40 (already posted in the Slow throughput etc. thread. Lots of others are experiencing the same problem).

It could be bcos there is no HSDPA base-station in the Thread Killer thread...:p

Seriously though, please update or add a touch of reality to your location - as per the sticky thread request.

Now, about that problem, it isn't a new problem, I had the same problem a few days ago for the very first time, best to run Vodacom's speed test to see where the problem might be - or might not be.

:D

Okay updated location to be a little more realistic !

Seems better this morning
