Dude edit your post and get your address details off the forum - we're nice trusting people, but don't be suprised when you get some dodgy bills and goods in the mail ;)
ID theft is so heavy and it can all start with this kind of personal info - thats just the paranoid android in me...

I think V3G meant for you to PM your details to him :)

Thanks, I was a bit peeved this morning to find my 3G still lacking and didn't think what I wrote.

Can you now please remove it from your post?:D

slow internet the last few days?

Hi, I live in the Northern suburbs of Cape Town and I am experiencing a very slow internet connection the last few days
Anyone else have this problem?
I'm on the Vodacom HSDPA

IC,
Here are the speed test results:
Download:1149 k
Upload: 323 k
I live in the Goodwood area

I'm using this website: http://www.briefing.com/Platinum/InDepth/InPlay.htm
but you won't be able to use it as it's subscription-only but all websites I've tried today has been slow to load/refresh
It's been happening since the blackout on Friday
Is that speed normal?
I thought it should be 3000 plus?
Ps: I'm not downloading anything, it's just general browsing

I can just confirm that vodacom has serious problems with the network.
Every day you can follow the same pattern. If you ping US based servers, e.g. google, you have really good latency in the morning (330ms at 7am). With every hour later, the latency gets worse.
Already at 9am in the morning you are in the 500ms area, with frequent packet drops. In the evening 800ms with lots of packet drops is common.
That really sucks, you can not use this connectivity if you are working with servers based in the US.

regards,

Wolfgang

Wolfgang, where are you based?

I am in KalkBay Capetown. The local connection and speed is absolutely fine. I get the average 1.5Mbit and low latency to local sites (e.g. 100ms to iafrica.com). The issue is the international routing specifically to the US. Europe, e.g. Germany is much better.

E.g. do a ping to www.google.com (500 - 700ms right now with packet drops)
ping to sip.qsc.de (consistently 300 - 400ms not packet drops)

it could be that they route the US through a different sea cable, perhaps via east coast, but thats pure specualtion. Traceroute does not really work in vodacom network.

Slow speeds - Randburg

I'm in Robindale in Randburg.

For the past week or so I have had dropped connections and VERY high latency.
VPN to the office is impossible to use because of the latency. Streaming downloads are OK though.

Option data card plugged into a Linksys router (same effect on my laptop so its not the router). At work (Midrand) speed is normal.

The Vodacom speed test gives me:

Download Speed: 269 kbps (33.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 162 kbps (20.3 KB/sec transfer rate) :(

Am I the only one whose connection has lost all throughput (connecting to any APN just fine) for about an hour after 21:30 almost every day this week? Monday, Tuesday, Thursday I can confirm.

On Monday and Tuesday, the Recorded "we are currently experiencing problems..." message was on 155, so I assume VC was quickly alerted by complaints. Or was this scheduled maintenance/upgrading? I only ask because of the repeated time and duration. If so, is there a place that this is announced?

I have been very pleased with the speeds I'm getting since the 3.6 upgrade (averaging around 2.6). But if it's a choice between fast or stable, I'll take stable please.

Thanks for any responses.

Yup, I also had problems last night. Tried to play Guild Wars and the connection just died halfway through the mission

That was at exactly 20:30.

Issue: Was connected on internet APN download/upload stopped. Disconnected/reconnected - same. Tried internetvpn - worked for about 10minutes then that too went belly up. Disconnected/reconnected (internetvpn) - no downloads/uploads - waited a couple of minutes - connection became active again and no issues after that. Didn't try internet apn again.
