Voice over data and its affect on mobile call prices

Yep I agree just pulled the viber app which is for android and iphone and coming to blackberry soon, works like whatsapp but for talking, no logging in, just sees who has viber installed from your contacts. I spoke to my daughter in New Zealand via my wifi was so clear that she could have been in the room with me. Tried it on 3G and was excellent as well. Uses 240K per minute, about 1mb of data for a 4 minute mobile call to other viber uses. Needs quite fast smartphones though, Galaxy s and sii etc.

If you manage the data network properly the voice should be at least on par with current GSM quality (which is not really that amazing currently). In fact it could be a lot better as more bandwidth could be dedicated for VoIP data and calls could have higher sampling rates which means a better sound quality.

Also perhaps there should be a new MyBB AKC sub site set up judging by the volume of articles MyBB publish about him. Maybe you could also start titling them for easier grouping like "AKC mentions voice over data again, this time on 702" and so forth...

Maybe some work as a journo to get some info on HOW he sees this happening in the next few years and WHAT Cell C plans to do to expedite this?
 
remembering the days of Vodacom (and the other networks) throwing a hissy-fit about people doing voice over their data networks, pillaging their cell call profits ,threatening to bill us R25/Mb for voip packets,.
Not sure if its still the case... i'm sure they don't do it anymore, as many of us have used 3G to do Skype and other voip apps, but i wonder if they've removed it from their terms n conditions? Probly still there, in case they loose too much they can still pull that one :-)

If VC and MTN did that I am sure between Cell C and 8ta one or both would not, they would see a huge increase in subscriber numbers, specifically the business and tech users who normally have higher than average monthly bills increasing their ARPU a lot.
 
hehe, jaa, we don't like people telling us what we can or not do with the data we paid for, so bad billing for voip usage would be a bad move.
clearly its the way forward, that voice will also go via data, even DSTV can go over data nowadays :-)
 
The problem with VoIP is that a data connection has to be established between both parties, which means both parties are charged for the call unlike with traditional GSM where i never have to recharge and have a zero balance but still receive calls. I guess the future they talking about will involve unlimited data plans at much cheaper prices or might there be another way this can be done?

There are already lots of apps that do mobile Voice & Video over IP (mVoIP)
  • Google Talk (also does video)
  • Skype
  • Viber
  • Tango
  • Nimbuzz
  • Fring
  • Facetime (WiFi)
  • FNB Connect Talk VoIP
  • etc
Some allow for breakout to POTS networks

There already is .. the joke of the day section.

Voice prices will decline when voice calls are carried over data, simply because of the much lower price of data, said Knott-Craig. The lower rates will also require different mobile business models to accommodate the lower margins.

This from the same man who milked the consumer for every cent he could by refusing to change any business model despite lower broadband prices while the head of Vodacom?
