Vox Telecom Fatpipe

Tried to sign up yesterday. Was sent the application by someone from Vox. Replied and asked him if it was possible for me to pay via EFT. His response....was not a yes or no answer. His response was not even that he would find out and get back to me. His response was that I contact the accounts department.

Did this and haven't heard a thing since. Will rather stick with the hopeless incompetents at TI. They are no better, but rather the devil you know and all that.

I mailed '[email protected]'.
They replied fast and signed me up without an issue.

Sticking with TI because of something like this is a bit silly imo.

Me not wanting to sign up because of crap service during the sign up process is silly? OK.

Dude it is.
Based on what you said you're basically spiting yourself because of one person's bad service.
I have only received good service with VOX and the product is 100x better than TI will ever be.
Either way, your choice.

Crap network is a lot worse than crap service IMO.

I have higher standards than that.

Am I spiting myself....? I don't know. Sure I don't get the "privilege" of using their cool network. But I see it differently. I now have the privilege of holding onto my money. TI may not be perfect, but the network generally works for what I use it for, for less money.

South African consumers generally accept crap service. I am not one of those. I will rather go without (and in the process save money). I am funny that way.

cvanwie - Any idea why I am not able to use Twitch streams at Source on VOX?

I am on a 40Mb VDSL so I think it should be more than capable.

Same (on the Twitch part). I'm currently buffering on medium quality (906kbps) but I'm getting pretty much line speed on speed test and torrents (http://www.speedtest.net/result/4727606855.png) and getting 4000kbps+ on a random YouTube video.

I use Tardsplaya to watch Twitch but it randomly breaks every now and then and would much rather watch it in my browser...

cvanwie - should I open a support ticket for this?

I have exactly the same issue. Daytime - incredible. Then it gets progressively worse during the evening, to the point where loading a 300KB image from imgur takes up to 10 seconds around 7pm. Not even worth trying to load up a Youtube video. Doesn't seem to be an exchange issue on my side though, as traceroutes don't seem to indicate any increased latency at the first hop out.

Learned to live with it though, as using enough connections on downloads still gives me line speed - and during the daytime the bandwidth is amazing, and Vox cannot be beat for value for money on capped accounts and/or bolt-on at the moment.
As I said though:
P2p, YT downloader, and streaming from another site I use is pretty much awesome.
Everything else - dead!
But yes - vox has been awesome when my exchange isn't acting up.

I've seen you complaining about TI before.
How long have you stuck with them regardless of poor performance and service?
Yet 1 instance from VOX and you post here?
Where is TI less?

Anything with multiple connections (NNTP, P2P, etc) will eventually max the line. Streaming/browsing (single connections) is generally very slow for me in the evenings.

Aah ok. I get you. That seems to be what's happening with me then. So it's more the number of connections than the protocol? And this can be caused by the exchange having an issue?

Anyone know when the "FREE data between midnight and 6.00 a.m." is supposed to kick in ? I did a test last night and downloaded around 2GB between these "free" hours and it was taken off my cap. I took a screen shot of the data available before and after as proof.

Single slow connection = slow speed.
Lots of slow connections together = faster overall speed.

If Telkom themselves have told you your exchange is congested, that's likely your issue, especially since nobody else here is reporting speed issues in the evenings generally. (or in the Cape in my case - although there are some weird latency issues which are being investigated)

Simple way to test.

When you are experiencing these slow speeds - run a tracert to mybroadband, google.co.za etc. If the second path ping is upward of 100 then you have issues.

Or run a WinMTR to a site.

Tough to diagnose at the moment, especially if he's in the Cape, as there are separate latency issues ongoing being experienced by many without other exchange congestion issues.

Yes I complain about TI. And yes I stick with them as their network works 99% for what I use it for (nightsurfer).

I am on the R99 10GB (which is 20GB for the next few months) softcap package. But I only use it during nightsurfer 99% of the time and that always works more or less perfectly.

So yes, I may get 25GB with vox (which is irrelevant for my needs as Im only interested in the uncapped bolt on part) and yes with Vox I get extra hours of free download time for R50 more (Fatpipe lite + uncapped bolt-on). But that said, I can barely keep up with all the content I download during the 7 hours per day TI provides for free downloading. So Vox isn't all that appealing. I just wanted to give them a shot as everyone keeps raving about good customer service and network which in my instance isn't true (the customer service part anyway) That one person I dealt with represents the company in my opinion.

Nobody is doing me a favour. I am willing to pay for a service. I am not hard up to make use of them. Business is obviously booming.

Thank you. Will do that. One thing I can say though is that my second hop had never been over 100 (with all the tracerts done for AH).
The worst it has been was I believe 34.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Sorry. Should've mentioned - not in the Cape.
I am in deep South of JHB, near Meyerton.

I do agree it is the exchange causing the issue - was just trying to figure out how some things work well and others don't.
Now that it has been explained (ie multi- vs single-connections) I finally understand. Thank you.

Having dealt with Telkom's call center and turn-around times in the past, I honestly don't have the patience to pursue this. Spending over an hour on hold only to speak to someone who doesn't have a clue what you're talking about and can only respond with what's written down on their checklist is not my idea of a good time. You can also almost hear the gear change in their tone when they find out you're (a) not using Telkom Internet and (b) not using a Telkom-sold modem. The attitude changes to "Ah, not our problem, try rebooting". No thanks.

It's tedious. Speaking to the call center won't help you at all. It needs to be escalated into the right hands so tests can be done and once the tests show there is congestion they will upgrade the bandwidth.

I will shoot you a PM. Your are from Cape Town? I can give you an email address from one of the Telkom network gurus in tableview. Email him with a solid report. Ping and tracert reports of the times you experience slow access and high latency. Also include that you tested this on multiple ISP accounts. Best is to use ping plotter. Let it run for a few days, save the output and send it to him.
