Are any of you using VPN servers to connect overseas? I started using BlackVPN about a month ago and it is brilliant. It allows me to purchase music that is not available in South Africa. It bypasses shaping on my uncapped account which means I have constant wirespeed downloads from anywhere in the world.

I can watch Netflix or Hulu or BBC like any UK or US citizen and can use music services like UK's Spotify. I highly recommend this service guys. Its about R50 per month depending on how many countries you want to connect to.

Just remember that certain ISPs will give you grief for doing that. Mweb specifically....

I use Hotspot Shield on my capped accounts for Hulu. Its free and has worked well so far, but it takes over your search engine and home page and you have to manually change it back

How so? The data is encrypted using 256bit encryption. How are they going to know what I'm doing on the encrypted circuit?

They probably don,t know what you doing, but they know you using some form of encryption which is against their small print.

I make use of my VPS in Netherlands for this, works like a charm. $10 per month and bonus website etc hosting.

Just be careful what you connect to while on the VPN.

Like clockwork some Chinese lowlife hack my Gmail password when I logged into Gmail while connected to the VPN.

They don't, but they don't need to. MWeb has a shaping system that classifies your data into categories. Website, email, torrents, WoW etc and finally a category which the system can't figure out (i.e. Encrypted).

If the % of you total traffic that falls into the last category is too high, they assume you are bypassing shaping and give you grief. This would happen when for example you run torrents through a VPN. Or in this case Hulu.

I think that might be avoided if you login to GMail with https...not sure though & def won't try it.

Also, 2step authentication for GMail ftw!

There are ways to get around the encryption as always.

I was using AceVPN before to get access to international tv content, but decided to try HideMyAss this month, and am very pleased with it so far.

Thanks for the info. I'll be careful.

I'm looking for a free service that does not require me to install their client software?

Have used Hide My Ass as well. Works but from SA you still get buffering at times.
