Vumatel outage ?

Last night change my ip from dynamic ip to static ip then I have internet. But u need to know ip before load shedding and hope CPE not change ip:-(

I never thought that I would say this..
I'm thinking, why not just go back to a Telkom 10mb adsl? The telkom exchanges have always had reliable backup generators.

The fact remains that you cannot compete with Telkom when it comes to back-end and network. I wish we had OpenServe fiber, instead of this damned Vumatel.

Vumatel e-mail regarding with back up power the line will not go down not correct. The line stay on during loadshedding but when power comes on the internet line cuts out.

Yes, because 99% of the other people don't have theirs on a UPS, so when the power comes back on for them, it bombs out the network. If everyone else also have a UPS, the whole network should stay online during load shedding, and we won't have this problem.

I am not a network dude but why can't they segregate the network and identify the DHCP packet at the edge and have a dedicated infrastructure for that purpose instead of tossing into the same pool ???.

My mom is on Vumatel with Afrihost and after load shedding when she tried to browse the internet she also got redirected to an Afrihost/Vumatel branded page asking her to enter her cellphone number to activate her fibre connection. At first when she told me I was concerned she was seeing sort of scam or phishing attempt, but it looks like it is legit. Anyone else seen this too?
We never actually had to activate. After a bit the problem went away.

Yes quite correct. If DHCP broadcast storms are really the issue they can have smaller subnets and have a DHCP Relay Server on each subnet to forward DHCP requests (by unicast instead of broadcast) to the central DHCP Server.

Yep the DHCP flood kicks off existing connected customers.
UPS will only help if EVERYBODY uses them.
Wait, I was planning on buying a 1KVA UPS today like Vumatel has recommended to stay online, but I will still be disconnected anyway? Is this accurate?

I have a UPS ... it helped fokall ... you will be wasting your money unless you can convince ALL or the majority of Vumatel customers in your loadshedding Zone to buy it as well.

Unless they retrofit each CPE with battery backup system or provide each Vumatel customer with a UPS is ain't going to help jack.

Thanks for the headup man! This waiting for 6+ hours for the line to authenticate after loadshedding is getting old really fast!

loadshedding 20:00 - 21:00
its now 22:15 and my internet is still down (Goedemoed, Durbanville).
tried resetting the cpe and router about 15mins ago, still no luck.

recovery after this afternoon's shedding was much faster than tonight....
Definitely seems to be a bigger issue in the Northern Suburbs.

Can someone direct to the correct forum on Vumatel fibre installations? They've done all the ground-work, laid all the pipes and access boxes - basically all the infrastructure seems to be done in my area but they haven't actually physically laid the fiber cables. I'm wondering how long this process usually takes because we've been waiting for months on end now and phoning them gets you no-where. You would think that all the hard bits are already done and its just a case of feeding the cables to people's houses and such.

I think the big question is, will MyBroadband contact Vumatel for a truthful answer to the prolonged outages, and what are they doing to ensure that they overcome the problems caused due to load shedding ?!?

They did and they may have not bothered to for all it's worth.

https://mybroadband.co.za/news/fibre/295862-why-vumatel-had-downtime-this-week.html

this resulted in a minimal delay in the restoration of some customers’ services

Nothing about their piss-poor client communication, why only their network, it's still happening even after it was 'fixed'.....
