!!!WARNING: This is a Rant!!! JVC Smart Android TVs

Isn't super old, and a budget model?

Well there's your problem. It's old and a budget model.
It is dstv now compatible. It isnt as old as you think it is.

The problem with these Smart tvs is, anything below R10000 will be slow & annoying.

Not true. My R9,000 LG UK6300 is snappy AF and supports all the 4K HDR glossiness with a magic remote.

No box can come close to the smart integration and ease of use that the TV offers out of the box.

Got an old laggy TV, sure, then get an Android box. Useless for modern decent TV's, and a waste of money.

Got a Mi Box S in the bedroom with a crappy Telefunken 55" UHD. I knew I bought sh|t, so wasn't expecting any smart functionality with this basic TV.

My LG in the living room has fantastic smart support. Plugging in a TV box will waste electricity and an HDMI port. It's simply not needed.

You kinda proved my point. R9000 isnt far off from 10k

And you probably got that model "on sale"

OK So my rant is that they advertised something and it did not operate in its bounds I dont care that its a cheapie TV sure. but it was a LED compared to my Plasma i had. So it was fine...

So Game swapped out the TV with the larger 55inch(Not smart but ok) they also offered a discount on a Android Box. Cool(didnt take it)

I have a PC in the lounge anyway. I just wanted a smart TV so I would not have to always turn that PC on. Though... the PC is connected to the 7.1 Ch Surround sound System. So I decided to take the 4K UHD TV and Use the PC with the Surround Sound and OMG! The difference in Plasma and 4K is unreal! So to say I am enjoying it. Not that I didnt decide to Burn Game at the consumer goods and services ombudsman first as they are participants... So they got an email and are now forever sorry.

So I will most likely get a Xiaomi Mi Box S in the future or a Nvidia Sheild but right now I have watched a few hours of 4K content and its GREAT. and we are planning to Up the screen size in the gaming room so I will most likely move this to the gaming room and get a 65" LG or 75" Depending(Black Friday :) )

For Now to anyone who wants to get a JVC or Telefunken Smart TV, just take the larger screen size screw the smart Part... Also for everyone else.... I did manage to get dstv now working on a non certified Device, so that helped me sort out my GF's Fathers MXQ box get dstv now on it functioning.

Thanks All.

All decent brand TV's have continual updates on their smart TV's. Our 7 year old Samsung (E something series) TV at work still receives updates and runs YouTube and Netflix flawlessly.

Modern WebOS and Tizen found on LG and Samsung TV's beat the best Android boxes with their superior features and integration.

There is no need to buy a media box unless your TV is very old, or cheap and nasty with crap smart support.

I strongly disagree I have a Samsung Nu7100 Smart TV (supposedly a good smart TV) you really can't do anything other then Netflix, Youtube and DSTV Now.

For everything else you need a mi box or equivalent so you can sideload things like Cyberflix (90% of the TV I watch). You are losing access to every TV series/movie, access to live TV from all over the world and casting. There really aren't any superior features and integration that you talk about because I can sideload any app from the app store that will do a better job then 99% of anything Samsung has out without Samsung adding in limits.

Really seems to me that you haven't tried/used a good Android box with its extensive features for any extended period of time but you are happy with the basic features most smart TV's have. Possibly you tried the Apple TV which does exactly what a Smart TV does and becomes an expensive paper weight.

I will give the Samsung smart TV one thing over the Mi Box and that is in 4k viewing, it just looks crisper.

This appeals to you - most people are not interested in side-loading hacking, scripting or whatever you need to get the pirated shows. In that case, your Mi Box is going to be the better option. But for the majority of people wanting to stream Netflix, Showmax, DSTV Now or Showmax, the Smart TV is the better solution.

Whatever you do, stick to a Google and Netflix certified box like the Mi , LIT , Ematic or Nvidia.

Too many people fall into the trap of saving R400.00 and buying something inferior, which makes them want to pull our their hair when it doesn't work

That pretty much describes the first post of this thread :sneaky:

It does, yea ;)

I specifically meant with regards to an external Android media box though - but same idea with a TV, I guess

I often see people on my news feed asking which Android media box to get , they get 10 different suggestions ... and end up taking the cheapest they can find. Only to come later and say their Netflix is buggy and DSTV Now doesn't work

I'm not interested in piracy... and yes, I also own a Mi Box S as well, so know what I'm missing out compared to my TV's own smart functionality... Nothing.

Between Netflix, YouTube, Showmax, Amazon Prime, DSTV Now etc, there's plenty to watch.

So your advice is to buy a dumbed down expensive (10k+) smart TV when you could just choose a TV with really good picture quality and android box (not dumbed down smart box) for 7-8k ...... on a tech forum. Then lose out on all the functionality like casting, adding/trying out apps (don't have to be piracy) and customizing your TV watching experience basically losing out on all the things that tech guys like to do......

Seems like bad advice to me

I can see from the 28 000 posts that you like arguing for the sake of arguing so I'm just going to leave it here.

Seems to make sense to rather go for high end TV with webOS than buy budget and then still get 4k droid box or apple tv4k. ?

I want to replace my old Samsung TV with 4K HDR TV, must have decent webOS so I don't have buy an addiotnal ATV4 or Droid box.
Use Plex, Emby, ipTV, CBS, Nat Geo, Discovery, History etc via Directv sub so it must support all this as well.

seems like alot to ask from a webOS based TV.
However there is a 75" from LG with WebOS and things like DSTV netflix, showmax and them works great.
