I think it is hilarious that the user 'unsuspectingly' got a bill for R2500. Wake up an smell the coffee. That is 100Gb OVER the 10-40Gb. I have a hard time believing that you don't know that you have leeched over 100Gb.

Here is the thing, the large amounts of local bandwidth being used, how much of that is being legally used? There are only so many linux distros that you can pull. I used to do alot of online gaming on local servers and I hardly used over 4GB a month even with that, so I can only think that the people moaning about caps over 10GB are pulling stuff illegally.

Of what relevance is that? The user pays a crapload of money for bandwidth. He is entitled to do with it as he pleases.

Agreed. The content is not relevant. The user should and can do what he likes with it. I think the point is though how can you be 'suprised' that you have used 100Gb + ?

I don't think they're surprised that they have passed it. I think they're surprised that they got charged and a hefty charge at that. Would be nice to have local only uncapped packages. I heard mweb has it. I might switch. I don't want to have to worry about getting charged for exceeding, since I wouldn't really know how much "exceeding" actually means. The general consensus is that 100GB is the cut-off.

Go for it, but I suspect Mweb are offering this 'free trial' because they probably cannot account the data. They are most definitely being billed for it by SAIX, so I reckon it is a matter of time before they will start charging.

I doubt a company as big as Mweb 'can't account' for it  ....... and AFAIK, it's not a trial anymore either, it's permanent.

My objection is not that they bill for the excess, but that they bill at R25.50 per gig, when local SAIX bandwisth is available (retail) at R10 per gig. If they charged at R10/gb for the excess I wouldn't complain, but R25.50 is a rip-off.

Telkom says otherwise:

This is the email I received from Telkom 3 days ago. It states very clearly that should I exceed my initial service threshold I have access to Telkom's unique collective threshold management services. It then goes on to say that when I exceed the unique collective threshold management services I will have restricted access.

Nowhere does it say I will be charged for excess usage.

So which Telkom do I believe?

Dear subscriber

According to our records your total online usage as at [2008-8-30 00:00:01] has exceeded your initial service threshold.

Username : [email protected]

Uploaded : 525MB or [0.51GB]
Downloaded : 3.34GB
Combined total : 3.85GB
Service threshold : 3.00GB
Percentage used : 128.44%

As you have reached your initial service threshold on your combined total usage, we suggest that you reduce high volume usage habits to remain online and unaffected.

As a TelkomInternet subscriber you still have access to our unique collective threshold management services. This will allow you access until such time that this service reaches the aggregated threshold on the total service.

Should you elect to ignore this reminder your service will be subject to restrictions and you will only have access to the TelkomInternet website, e-mail and the four major banking sites.

Should your current allocated bandwidth not be satisfactory, you can purchase an additional usernames from 10215 (option 2) or buy online at https://online.telkomsa.net/external/

I'm annoyed by Telkom's stance that if they can't cap local then they'll just bill the k@k out of it and prevent use that way. Surely that is not what was intend by "local shall not be subject to cap".

And at R25 no less. Hell, even axxess who buys their cap from Telkom manages R12.

I still don't know why the emails sent by telkom don't show your local usage. the information on the email should just be a snapshot of the TI Tracker really.

I just hope that I don't get billed because my brother downloaded almost every night on a 4Mbps line.

Was probly his kids...:D No allowance for six months aught to do it...

Telkom could have a link on their usage site which could allow users to set their account to be capped once they have used their allocated local bandwith. They still would be abiding by the regulations as it would be the consumers choice whether to have their account capped after their free local bw has been used. Also they could set up a local bw topup system which customers could purchase additional local bandwith at a reasonable rate ie: at least less than R19 which another provider chargers for local bandwith.
They would then still make some money as they are randomly charging customers atm. I think many of us who download quite a lot would be prepared to pay a reasonable sum for additional topup local.

Axxess charges only R10/gig regular, R12/gig prepaid.

DO NOT USE Telkom Internet if you are worried about this. They are just farking A-holes for not putting a system in place or a trip switch function there where customers can opt into a auto cut should they exceed a specified amount of bandwidth. Telkom is abusing it's customers again.

It is abusing them by not allowing cheaper bandwidth and it is also abusing them by not allowing them to opt in to a chosen threshold of the subscriber's choice. Telkom will have to develop such a system because no where on the planet will you find such a **** of a company!
