"the onus is on customers to ensure that their TelkomInternet accounts are protected against any hacking or abuse,” said Petsana."

how typical ....... shirk all responsibility as usual.

Translated: "How can we rip you a new one if we notify you beforehand?"

I love how they cant cap local bw, but still make you pay for it.

/agree
So they're looking to offer a 'value-add' which will email your notification. Lol, sounds like they will charge you to notify you.

i smell a class action lawsuit coming:cool:

Telkom is not your nanny.

“Customers must ensure that their local bandwidth usage is checked on a daily basis. In addition, since Telkom is not allowed to cap customers on local bandwidth, the onus is on customers to ensure that their TelkomInternet accounts are protected against any hacking or abuse,” said Petsana.

We'll teach you stupid customers not to go complaining to ICASA...

If the guy got a R2500 bill, even if it was usage over 3 months it still works out to almost 100gig extra. Why sound so surprised, its not like it was only 1 gig? That is exploitation and then playing ignorant when Telkom does what they said they would and bill you for usageover 10gig. Secondly, its not that Telkom cant cap local, it is that they are not allowed to according to ICASA.

The guy who got billed that much must be retarded, how can you not know you are using that much bandwidth and not think there will be repercussions?

Besides if its local bandwidth then there are only so many avenues that you can use to download through and you would need to have a clue to use most of them. So im glad he got the bill, its people like that who mess things up for the rest of us who dont abuse the system.

When I got my R1500 bill, I was warned prior, but it was already too late.
They should actually take the effort to warn users, by sending a e-mail or a telephone conversation as soon as a user hits a certain amount, say 50Gig (on a 3Gig account)

This way, should the actual user KNOW, they'll KNOW a bill is coming, if they user DOESNT know, they can find a way to stop it but yes, as per usual, Telkom is just @#$@#@$ lazy!

+1
Why is everybody crying about being billed for downloading more than their allotted cap? Telkom sent several notification on e-mail about this, in addition to the notice on the TI-Tracker website.

This is like bitching after being caught/fined for going 180 in a 120 zone - you consciously made the choice to defy the rules and now you got nailed for it\

Pay the R2430 and stop bitching - it's not Telkom's fault that you want to be a rebel.

Hmmm... I went over my cap by four times my amount.... oops :D

This is absolutely ridiculous (as usual). When are Telkom gonna realize that its completely buggered up in the head to distinguish between local & international cap. Geez, we're the only country in the damn world who distinguishes between this. This is BULL.

Once again we wouldn't have these problems if caps weren't so small... quite petty.

Glad I'm on MWEB's Unlimited Local

While there should be a notification system once you are over your free cap, the uncapped local was an ICASA regulation that has obviously backfired (they meant "free uncapped local" but got "charged uncapped local").

But bear in mind that the mobile carriers charge ludicrous out of bundle rates (and iburst too), so this is nothing new. People with technical knowledge of downloading and caps should not come crying when they have obviously abused the system. No-one in their right mind can expect >100GB for free in this country! While i sympathise with such a huge bill, there is some responsibility on the customer to understand all the rules of a product or service.

Here is the thing, the large amounts of local bandwidth being used, how much of that is being legally used? There are only so many linux distros that you can pull. I used to do alot of online gaming on local servers and I hardly used over 4GB a month even with that, so I can only think that the people moaning about caps over 10GB are pulling stuff illegally.
