I'm not saying let bygones be bygones. For the record I think ANC corruption is the biggest threat to national security in this country. If you have institutionalised corruption then you have a situation where anything in this country can be had for the right amount. That's basically what Vavi was saying the other week.

The hypocrisy in the cartoon,
-white people in a bar hear the corruption in a news report & immediately jump to the conclusion that it must be 'more ANC corruption'
-when it is revealed that this is actually NAT corruption they immediately leap the other way suggesting let the past stay stay buried. Sounds familiar (in the context of discussions here)?

That is because in those days the media was silenced.

Maybe some people NOW understand the disgust at the proposed legislation and the MAT.

It's simple, there wasn't that much.

I remember that one minister went to jail for some corruption issue (regarding land, I think).

Then there was the info scandal, but the people involved weren't personally pocketing the cash (not to a huge extent, anyway), they started/bought a newspaper with it.

I am sorry to have to say this, but you are very naive.

Even back then, there were political factions. The only times you saw corruption reported, was if one camp leaked info on the other's corrupt activites for their own gain (votes!).

There was huge corruption. Instead of the required German car, those days the ultimate status symbol were hunting trips, farms, etc. etc.

Interesting, yes, I guess that there was a lot of corruption wrt the arms deals and oil imports. As well as the homelands.

I was more thinking more along the lines of "normal" corruption, which is extermely rife now. It was certainly a lot more difficult to bribe a cop or traffic officer in those days.

And the new arms deals have appeared to be a money machine for some again - which shouldn't have happened, considering that there was no secrecy required this time.
