A month ago I switched from Webafrica's Home Capped VDSL to Business Capped VDSL (20Mb). They claim http://support.webafrica.co.za/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/1000/164/vdsl-qa "Business Capped VDSL: Platinum priority". When I switched I should have gone from Titanium to Platinum (http://support.webafrica.co.za/inde...rticle/View/669/0/bandwidth-priority-profiles) priority.

My effective performance however is less. All Websfrica is saying is I should upgrade to ADSL pro. I'm effectively paying more, getting less data, and - at the best - getting the same performance. After a month of battling with WA I'm getting fed up being treated like an idiot. Anyone got any suggestions for a viable alternative?

I currently use 100/150 Gig per month and I want a fast connection.

I switched from Home Capped VDSL 240 GB @ R 399 / month to Business Capped VDSL 180 GB @ R 419 / month. Hence I pay R 20 more, I have 60 GB less data, and - contrary to what WA claims here http://support.webafrica.co.za/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/1000/164/vdsl-qa at the bottom of the page - I'm not getting Platinum priority.

I've been a loyal customer to WA since 2005 and I spend more than R 1.000 each month with them. In return they treat me like an idiot. I'm considering switching to http://openweb.co.za.

What was wrong with your Home Capped account?

Which services are slow?

He is probably trying to do fullspeed news or Torrents during the day, and doesn't want to schedule those for 00:00 to 06:00.

The Business capped pro accounts, while expensive, should see fullspeed on those protocols during the day. Again, thats why those accounts cost so much...

I don't do torrents at all. I'm a developer and I use this account mainly for busineness purposes. I intermittendly get crap sound on Skype, I get buffereing on streaming video (1080p and 720p), for instance from http://tweakers.net. I get resets on VMware virtual disks that I upload and download.

Example of a mybroadband international speed test:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 1306 kbps (163.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1512 kbps (189 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 223 ms

That is worse than what I had with Home capped. What is the purpose of paying for VDSL with these results?

Something very wrong there.

Line stats?

And what happens when you use the free Afrihost 1GB account? Same crap speeds?

The point WA is stating "Business Capped VDSL: Platinum priority" (source: http://support.webafrica.co.za/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/1000/164/vdsl-qa). Then when you order and pay they simply say: sorry, you don't get Platinum priority! That is ridiculous.

Any advice regarding a provider that does deliver on promises welcome.

Haven't tried Afrihost. The speed I was getting before was reasonable. It is reasonable now every once in while as well. The thing is when I pay over R 1.000 for 20Mb VDSL + 90GB per month data I expect to have excellent speed all the time. That is what WA promises, but does not deliver.

Just did another speed test:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 7808 kbps (976 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1638 kbps (204.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 210 ms
Mon 27 Oct 2014 17:20:12 SAST

It's much better, but it's still not great. A 210ms latency is just not responsive and an effective 1 MBs on a 20 Mbs is also not enough.

Line:

Your line is in great shape

Current Telkom profile speed kbps
Downstream speed 20476 kbps
Downstream SNR 32.4 dB
Upstream SNR 35.5 dB
Max downstream speed 10240 kbps
Downstream attenuation 5.2 dB
Upstream attenuation 7.1 dB

What I'm trying to get at, is that maybe the account isn't the problem.

Maybe you have line issues or exchange issues.

Log onto your router and get your SNR and attenuation stats.

Then get the free 1GB Afrihost account and do a speed test with that as well.

But only test during the day. it could be that you're in a business area so exchange congestion doesn't happen at night.

Ok, those are fantastic stats. You have the exchange in your backyard?

I'll try Afrihost and I will report on performance. @Chevron, which ISP do you use?
