Weight Loss/ Gain thread Dec 2014 - 2015

What's up with the pro-saturated-fats responses? Is this a banting thread?

No, it is a weight loss thread. Banting is making those of us who follow it lose weight. Your calorie counting makes you lose weight. Practice your signature and then come back to me on saturated fats....

No, its a factual thread.

As far as I know, only mono and poly unsaturated fats (besides trans fats of course) are considered bad for you.

Its all good, I'm not here to argue.. just chiming in with my weight loss :)

I'll show myself out.

Oh man. What a horrible weekend for me. But great times with family.

KFC, Steers, Ellispark boerie rolls, chocolate, pizza and more chocolate.

I'll just see this as my final little binge before I go on a serious cut from Friday. Must get down to at least 15% bf.

12% is the ultimate goal.

Wow, such hostility and defensiveness. I've clearly touched a nerve. I won't be engaging in this debate. You guys have obviously been through this before.

As I said, I just popped in to join the weight loss reports, I have no intention of bashing banting.

Enjoy your day guys

if you have proof then post it? Else you're randomly saying things for the heck of it to get people all riled up.

Disclaimer: I'm neither pro Banting nor anti Banting.

Gained 1.5kg over this long weekend. Am thinking half of that is temporary. It was a multiple course buffet dinner last night which invariably turns into all you can eat :(

On the plus side I've been gyming every 2nd day and I think some of the excess weight gain has been put towards muscle. Based on how my shirts fit me, chest is getting bigger and waist is getting smaller.

Hey guys, just stumbled onto this thread and thought I'd weigh in.. (see what I did there?)

I weighed 64.3kgs on 1st Jan, and today I weigh 52.2kgs (I'm really short, about 1.6m)

The weight loss method I've been using is calorie counting (using MyFitnessPal). I've found it fantastic, as I've been eating mainly low-calorie healthy meals, but have been able to include Nando's, Burger King, pizza, sugars & carbs into my diet whenever I craved them and still lose about an average of about 1kg per week.

How many calories do you consume per day?

I've changed my diet, keeping my exercise regime the same.

Dietary changes - I no longer eat cashews every day. When I weighed the cashews, I realized generally 100g was the minimum I would eat. Often I'd get home and have a handful. So, my actual calories intake was probably around 2700 - in other words, about the same as what I would burn in an average day, maybe not counting exercise.

Instead of the cashews, I now eat breakfast a little later (7AM instead of 6AM) and have an apple at 9AM. Oh and I'm also trying out having quiche for lunch instead of bread. I might carry on doing it for a bit. The quiche I made this week was made with chicken, cheese, leek, onion, 5 eggs and a cup and a half of egg. I got 4 servings out of it, and I think each serving is around 450 calories. That replaces my 300 calorie sandwich.

Oh and the other thing I am experimenting with is homemade baked unsweetened cheesecake. I added no sugar or artificial sweeteners, and the crust is made from flaxseed powder, coconut, chickpea flour, butter and eggs. So quite low on carbs. The experiment is to have the cheesecake when I get home from work, because I'm usually peckish when I get home. Its around 200 calories per serving. It doesn't taste fantastic because it is a little bland and overcooked, but... next time! The crust actually worked quite well.

New calorie intake - 345 for the breakfast cereal, 100 for the milk, 65 for the apple, 450 for the quiche, 200 for the cheesecake, plus 700-800 for supper, plus 100 for milk used in coffee. New total: 1860 to 1960. Compare that to 2400 to 2700 that it was before.

Let's hope my calculations are accurate. The funny thing is that I expected to be starving, cutting out that many calories. But I've been doing it since last week, and I'm fine. The cheesecake is a new thing though.

Lost 0.5kg this week. Which is great since I have started getting back to normal eating. Past week avg calorie intake was around 3200 per day.

Been at a ridiculously long plateau of 93 kg after losing about 30 kg. After Easter weekend and a curry weekend I am at 95 kg

Starting again. Going to try for 0.5 kg a week as opposed to 1 kg a week.

Well what have you been doing? If I am not mistaken, you have to change things up a bit from time to time else your body will just slow down your metabolism so as not to burn fat. We are naturally selected to store fat, so to try to lose fat is fighting against our genes.

If your body thinks it is starving then it will do its utmost to hang on to as much fat as possible.

Well done Fanie - you're doing superbly well!

It was very slow going this last month. Had a couple of beer days, but I just keep going. One day of bad something isn't going to put me off. Even if I take another year or more to lose what I want to. The key is just to keep going and going and moving forward.

I lost the 30 kg in about as many weeks (don't get me wrong, I am proud of the achievement), just keeping my kilojoules at about 6300 per day. Once I reached 93 kg I just stopped losing. So I decided to leave dieting for a bit,go back to normal, but careful eating. Was hovering around 94 kg. Then Easter hit...

That is why I am going to try the slower less extreme level of weight loss. I suppose this is kinda the downside of not going to a dietitian, then again not many dietitians get their patients to lose 30 kg.

@konfab, that sounds like way too little kj for a 90kg plus kg man. It sounds more appropriate to someone who is around 60kg or less.

The one strategy that makes sense to me is to eat as much as you can whilst still losing weight. The reason being is that you have kj to cut when you hit plateaus. If you've been on 6300kj for a long time, well then, that's the problem. Your body adjusted to that kj and tried its utmost to for that to be the new norm (and not lose weight at that kj level).

You risk metabolic damage if you starve yourself and are on too little kilojoules. Google Dr Layne Norton: https://www.google.co.za/search?q=l...UTF-8#q=layne+norton+metabolic+damage+youtube
