Yep. Looks like he had a 9.65 in him if he didn't cruise the last 30m, and start his celebrations from the 20m mark :). Wow. Privileged to have seen it live, and in HD nogal. I don't see this record being broken in a while, and will go down in history as the first sub 9.7sec 100m sprint. Who would have thought it's possible...

could you see any puncture marks on him where they injected gummi berry juice to make that freak run like that?

unbelievable!!! i have never seen any athlete run like him. he was really cruising!

the 200m final is on wednesday at 4:20pm (SA Time)

the 4x100m relay is gonna be a real cracker!! he will surely be the anchor and i can definitely see the current world record being cracked!!

Nowadays 100m is ran under 10sec
so what? did you see him running away from the others and actually start celebrating about 20m before he crossed the line?
Under 10 sec is impressive yes, under 9.9 even more... under 9.7???? brilliant!
Boy am I glad I switched over from the rugby for this :D

The West Indies did pretty ok overall at the 100m, I'm quite surprised.

Race result:

1. Usain Bolt (Jamaica) 9.69 seconds WR

2. Richard Thompson (Trinidad & Tobago) 9.89

3. Walter Dix (U.S.) 9.91

4. Churandy Martina (Netherlands Antilles) 9.93

5. Asafa Powell (Jamaica) 9.95

6. Michael Frater (Jamaica) 9.97

7. Marc Burns (Trinidad & Tobago) 10.01

8. Darvis Patton (U.S.) 10.03

... Hes very tall - i reckon that helped. Long legs, bigger strides..

Great run! Poor Powell just cant win the big races...

Are you guys sure that Bolt will compete in the 200?

BEIJING (AFP) - Usain Bolt of Jamaica produced a stunning performance to win the men's 100 metres Olympic title here on Saturday in a new world record time of 9.69 seconds.

The 21-year-old - who held the old record of 9.72secs - beat home Richard Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago (9.89secs) while Walter Dix of the United States was third in a time of 9.91secs.

"I felt the world record earlier on," said Bolt, the first Jamaican to win the title.

"I came here just to win and I did just that. I didn't even know I'd broken the world record until I did my victory lap.

"Now I'm just concentrating on my two races coming up. I came here prepared and I'm going to try and do it the (100 and 200m double)."

His performance sealed a remarkable transition from 200 meter specialist to winner of the showcase race of the Olympics.

Bolt only began racing the 100m in the last year, putting his fellow sprinters in the shade with his performances. He first really showed his threat in May, when he set a world record time of 9.72 in New York.

Bolt can now set his sights on becoming the first man to win the 100m and 200m Olympic double since Carl Lewis in 1984. He will be full of confidence ahead of Wednesday's 200m final.

"I am just focusing on the 200 meters now," said Bolt. "I came here prepared and I'm going to do it."

Yeah...that was truly epic. He was just soooo much faster than all the others that it wasn't much of race to the finish. Second place also seemed pretty chuffed about his performance.

9.68 secs for the 100m... WOW!!!
9.69s..not 9.68. Unless he is getting faster by the hour.;)

For 100m the "ideal" height is kinda average-ish. Something about very tall people being rubbish with the starts. Never really understood it exactly...but thats what they said in a docu about sprints.

that is true, Usain Bolt is not the fastest out the bloc, but at about 40m he just glides past the rest of the field with his big, fast strides. Asafa Powell is very quick out the blocks.
