What car to get?

Not the Veloster. Doesn't even have independent suspension at the back.

I just haven't found the f30 I could fall in love with. The one's I've checked out always have something missing that just have me jumping.


I nearly went for a Volvo V40, until I read up on their terrible resell value.

Yeah looking for cars that are in demand can be a bit of a pain.I'm looking for one for a cuz and it's not easy to find exactly what you want at the right price.

Whew,you dodged a bullet there!

Those things drop value like crazy.I think not even an Alfa can compete with so bad resale values.
 
Because after that the prices have deprecated to much that all cars are about within a few thousand rand from each other.

Correct, the VW/VAG would be worth a good few thousand Rand more at any given point. An old car worth R20,000 vs an equivalent old VAG worth R22,000 means the VAG is worth 10% more. It's a significant percentage even though the value is low. The same pattern will be found with any aged VAG. Hence they are so popular with the best resale value.

If we were to look at VW Mk1/Mk3/Mk4 Golfs and Jettas, for example, they will be worth far more than 10% of other brands' equivalents. These cars seriously hold their value.
 
Exactly, you then have to ask yourself if it really was worth it to deprive yourself of choice, individuality and driving pleasure for an entire decade - just for R2k more trade in value? I would not even do it for R10k (50% more).

VW/VAG offers all of that with added reliability, the best parts availability and parts system, best pirated parts availability, as well as the best independent mechanic availability.

Own a rare or old VW/VAG and need any parts from engine to cosmetic? No problem, the Uitenhage or Centurion factories/parts storage warehouses will have stock.

Can't say the same for other brands, they're simply scarcer and there are fewer of them and therefore more timely importing needs to be done.

Perhaps the above is not important to you since your main form of transport is a bicycle. Many people rely on their vehicles for their livelihoods and safety which is why most people choose VAG.
 
There is some truth in what you say, I know of a guy at work that waited two months for Citroen to get a new rear window for his C2. Apparently it had to be order from Europe. However there are other brands that also sell in high volumes like VAG and offer all the same benefits you list.

In my household there is one car that gets used very little and one that is in daily use. Our previous daily runner clocked up 235,000km with ease and traded in for R30k. Current daily runner has done 22,000km in the 15 months since we got it. Non-VAGs that are safe, dependable and affordable to service.

So I took the Volvo V40 T4 R-Design for a test drive, just to compare. And the thing is an absolute beauty.
But the depreciation issue wont let me commit. Does anyone know if Volvo does those guaranteed buy back values like Mercededs/BMW?

On another note, I'll try head out to VW to check out the Polo GTi.
