The Volvo ought to be a much better car. Let's see if the Polo makes you happy. Resale is important if you plan on changing cars more frequently. Always easier upgrading/justifying it when you have more to put in.

DO NOT GET THE 1.4T POLO GTI. You'll spend everyday of your life on edge that the engine is going to give trouble. If its the new 1.8T then go for it

My folks never had an Opel, not their style I guess. The only thing wrong with VW is that everyone assumes it is the best and buys it without thinking about it. There are plenty of good alternatives that offer more car for the money. Add to that the fact that VW really is pretty evil and even their name is a lie. I mean "Volks Wagen" seriously, when last could the volk afford these wagens? So this is my stance on VW in a nutshell. I like Opel because it is a direct competition for VW, but if I do buy a cat again it will probably be a Mercedes.

Obviously there are more like you, and then the opposite is also true.
Many people spend big chunks of their income on cars, nothing stupid about that, the stupid thing is if they just went for the "default" option without really thinking about it.
What was it like? I'm also considering that for the car I'll be buying at the end of the year.

It's lovely to drive. On long stretch roads I put my foot down & I was like "wow". I thought it was in sport mode, until the dealer actually put it in sport...that's when I thought that this was the car for me. There's lots of leg room for passengers & head room was ample in the back, even with a panoramic sunroof. The boot is not the largest vs its competition but the back seats fold down flat. It feels well built. The display console is magnificent. It has ambient lighting so at night, the inside of the car can be lit up.
The downside I could come up with was the driving position. The seat seemed very low. Maybe I just didn't set myself properly, if I do go in again I will definitely make sure that I'm 100% comfortable. Oh, the panoramic sunroof doesn't open. Which is kinda sad cause summer night drives are enjoyable with an open sunroof. The one I drove didn't have a reverse camera which I found odd, since it has the auto-parking feature.
The Volvo V40 is an absolute beauty & very fun to drive, I would have signed papers for it but I am still worried about the depreciation value for resale. Even if I do decide to keep it, I've read that once the car is out of its service plan the cost of getting it serviced (especially if some vital component needs to be replaced) would make Mercedes & BMW owner cry.
By the way, Volvo just announced the face lift of the V40, which in my opinion has a stunning headlights.

See above.. Previous Polo GTi hurt me so I can never support it
A Golf with that sort of mileage would be close to or probably have already finished its service plan.
IMO VW has the worst basic service plan out of all the manufacturers. So if it has to be a second hand VW it still has to give me at least 2 services. I'll have a look around but won't be doing it as active as with other cars.

Went to VW today & it was really meh. The range of Polo vehicles always seem to be missing something. So the only Polo ranges which come with an automatic are the Highline & the GTi. Cruise control is an optional extra...even with the top spec GTi. Why?
And the start-stop functionality is only available in the Blueline range...which doesn't have an automatic.
If I do go for a Polo I'll got for the Highline with cruise control.
I also went to Ford to look at the new Focus. I really do like the features. The face is really nice. Very roomy inside. I didn't test drive but will do sometime soon.

Don't forgot the expensive Polo GTI does not have climate control & curtain 'bags as standard. Both are options.
