What car to get?

If I were to go for a VAG product then I would go for an Audi because it has much better value for money, drive, comfort, quality and features since it competes with BMW and Merc.Vw on the other hand competes with more average brands like Toyota,Nissan,Kia and Opel etc

Yes sure you may have to settle for an Audi with 30k or more on the clock as opposed to a new VW for the same price but it still makes much more sense to me.

Went to VW today & it was really meh. The range of Polo vehicles always seem to be missing something. So the only Polo ranges which come with an automatic are the Highline & the GTi. Cruise control is an optional extra...even with the top spec GTi. Why?
And the start-stop functionality is only available in the Blueline range...which doesn't have an automatic.

If I do go for a Polo I'll got for the Highline with cruise control.

I also went to Ford to look at the new Focus. I really do like the features. The face is really nice. Very roomy inside. I didn't test drive but will do sometime soon.

I took the facelift Focus 1.0T for a test drive at the end of last year. Was a very nice car

resale value on a Golf GTI is one of the best around, there is a reason why they say Volvo is for life cause you stuck with it after you buy it. Lol

Might as well get a Merc, the original classy German.

Yeah for my father....seriously,dad had two c classes, quite enjoyed them at his age.:)

In another ten years I think a 5 series or Merc would be in my range but not right now.

Resale value is not a good reason to buy a car.

Yeah if you intend to not upgrade in couple years time.

But the expensive parts for Volvo should be a concern if your'e planning to keep that car out of motorplan, and as a previous poster mentioned Volvo parts prices will make BMW,Audi and Merc owners cry and that's besides the fact that you still get aftermarket/second hand/pirate/oem parts for VW,Audi and Merc easily at a much more reasonable cost.

Primarily because cars are not investments, they are depreciating assets at best. The primary function is to move you around and seeing as you might spend some time doing that it makes sense to get a car that gives you joy when you move around in it. Buy a car that suits your personality and individuality. Just like you choose your clothes, electronics, liquor, holiday destinations and all other things - buy something you like and will enjoy.

Forget about how well it retains its value because that will not give you as much joy as the other factors. Live a little.

A car has a good resell value for a reason, usually cause they are popular vehicles there are cars out there that have good resale value and you can stills live a little as you put it, so why not take resale value into consideration? Everyone knows that you going to lose value on a vehicle but if you can lose less why wouldn't you.

I keep my cars for a decade or more, after that all cars in the segment have values that are within a few thousand of each other. So in other words it's pretty useless to worry about resale value when you could be enjoying a car for what it should be.

So because it's a depreciating asset, you should screw yourself *all* the way!

If it means that when your time comes you can remember how much you enjoyed your car, instead of the 50c you saved then yes.

Or 80K? I can do a lot with a 80K.
The advice on here is contradictory nevertheless. On one hand Roux says "live a little", on the other hand he argues that you should drive the same car for a decade...

See it as a marriage, you're getting screwed anyway so make sure it's for the long run and you'll be fine.

R80k difference in trading in value?! That's insane, keep the car 10 more years until that difference is R8k or less.

If you buy the less ****tay option you don't have to be married to it. Cha-ching. That's the crux.
