What do you feed your dog?

Nutrition Lessons from Man's Best Friend: University research shows that fresh, wholesome foods may be healthier for dogs than processed kibble.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif., June 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Independent university research now demonstrates that feeding dogs fresh, healthy, whole food diets instead of highly processed kibble and cans results in improvements in measures of health.

The results of a landmark study conducted by animal science researchers in California show that feeding a group of dogs a freshly prepared, whole food, lightly cooked, nutritionally balanced diet made from real food is scientifically shown to increase white blood cells and blood proteins that could benefit immune health. The groundbreaking research is being presented this week at the 14th Annual American Academy of Veterinary Nutrition's (AAVN) Symposium, held in conjunction with the 2014 American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) Forum in Nashville, Tennessee.

Must be all bs, Ol' Mean Bastid. Haven't you been reading this thread? These folks know what they're talking about.

:p

Marty, what Ol' mean bastard posted is what we're all saying.

Is there a reason you are choosing to argue the facts we are posting?
We are after all just trying to look out for our dogs.
You may be happy with the condition of your dogs but calling them a part of the family and feeding them Bobtail does really not work.
Would your family be happy eating cardboard for supper?

Thanks for this site, according to the healthy weight tool both Pippa & Phoebe (don't ask ) are in peak condition. They're fed twice a day with Royal Canin 100g dry & 1/4 small Petleys tin each, marrow bones and rawhide chips as a treats - never accurately checked the poos but I'd guess they're one-a-day'ers :)

What?

Didn't you understand my post?

Inserts his last 5 bob and tries again:

So you agree? A dog should eat a varied diet and not the same stuff out of a bag everyday just because it's expensive and some websites recommend it? Or am I missing something? i.e. which facts am I arguing?

We are after all just trying to look out for our dogs.

I thought I was too?

You may be happy with the condition of your dogs but calling them a part of the family and feeding them Bobtail does really not work.

You'll need to elaborate here. Maybe point out my my use of "Bobtail" anywhere?

Would your family be happy eating cardboard for supper?

Smells like a rhetorical question to me :/

You're asking me to explain the obvious here.
Bobtail is not good.

End of story.

I never said buying the most expensive dog food in a bag is necessary.
But Bobtail?

I'm not trying to get into an argument with you but you seem to think that Bobtail is caring for your dog when it's clearly not a good food.
My step father goes on about how much he loves his dogs but feeds them Checkers no name brand pellets.

In my opinion if you care for your dog you will make the effort to give them the best food you can afford.
If this is Bobtail then fine, I won't argue.

Dude... wtf are you going on about Bobtail? I never said anything about Bobtail :wtf:
Not looking for an argument either, I simply listed what I fed my dog (thought that was the point of the thread) and got singled for poisoning my dogs etc.

EDIT: I think you're confusing me with ambroseg1

I just realized that and I apologize.
I'm a douche :o

On a "more" serious note though - I'm not giving my dogs chocolate as food or daily if that's what you folks think. And I don't give them coffee every morning :wtf: I was referring to letting whoever's closest at that point finish the last few sips of my Saturday morning cup on the odd occasion or have the sweet/chocolate that the little one threw on the floor (or directly out her hand when she's looking the other way).

Your original post - or at least the way I read it - made it sounds like it was a regular thing... Hence people, such as myself, getting a little hot under the collar.

You should still really avoid giving them sweets and chocolates though :)

I've had several German Shepherds over the years including pedigree Huskies...and I cook pap & bonemeal for them, mixed with any veg peelings.
Every 2nd day is a bowl of chunks...Warrior brand.
They don't mind either but favor the pap/bonemeal combo...
Weekends I boil a pot of bones for them

I can recommend a fantastic forum (UK, but most advice applies to SA as well) if you are really interested in getting fantastic advice from dogowners on food and anything to do with your dogs: behaviour, health etc etc.
Bear in mind these are serious dog people so you may be torn apart limb-by-limb is you are in any way a backyard breeder/have poorly-trained dangerous dogs/do not neuter or spay/feed them supermarket food/don't give them enough exercise. Many are registered breeders. And they are very pro-raw feeding (which is not realistically possible for everyone to do). Aside from that, there is very little they can't advise you on.
Anyway, if you are brave:

Fantastic advice on cats and other pets as well.

I see that now. Apologies for the confusion and [possibly undetected] sarcasm that followed :/

Not a frequent occurrence tbh. And in no way part of their regular diet. Sames applies to the rest of the tidbits they receive here and there.

Agree.

I think at the end of the day, everyone on this thread loves their dog and wants the best that they can provide for them, and others who have and love dogs will have and voice their concern when statements are made.

I'd suggest not giving them chocolate and coffee at all. But that's my opinion. It may not seem like a big deal if it is a small bit here and there, but those all add up in a dog and affects them far more in the long run.

Anyway, now that that is cleared up...
