I want unlimited bandwidth at a competitive price. Good, consistent service with reasonable customer support.

A reliable uncapped line option above all else, even if it means sacrificing speed and with moderate shaping. Speed matters less for me versus actually being able to get the info within reasonable time.

Underpinning this would be backup service.

A business ISP should have the following

Reliability
A good spam filter
Same speed for uploading. That frustrates me the most if you
Need to FTP something

What I don't mind:

Throttling of certain protocols like bittorrents
Paying for uptime
Super duper speed. 2mb is more than enough for 10 people

Full line speed at all times.
Lower than "un-capped" pricing. Only want to pay for what I use not for every one else's over usage.

what I want from ISP

What do i want...

Excellent quality and speed
Always uptime
Free 24Hrs desktop support
Lowest prices... for my package
No hidden clauses and slow peak speeds
Working spam filter

Bandwidth supplier:
Reliability
Good client communication (advance notice of maintenance, notification of problems when it occurs etc)
Fast response time to support requests
Consistent connection rather than super fast connection
Value for money i.e. does not have to be dirt cheap, but cost should match level of service

Hosting ISP:
As above plus well managed spam filter

What I want in a Business ISP, in order of importance:

  1. Must have a fast stable network, with redundancy, and little to no downtime
  2. Great support
    • agents must be well trained, polite and geeks - a difficult balance to achieve
    • a good online support/ticketing system that is intelligent, user-friendly, and integrated with a good client zone (account management system)
    • agents must call back when they promise to do so
    • 24/7 support
  3. Must have fully automated intelligent systems (admin, billing, support, usage tracking)
  4. Price must be competitive with the rest of the market
  5. Good notification system of network downtime/maintenance issues, cap status, etc, via SMS, email and other means (social media)
  6. ISP must have an attitude towards innovation, dropping prices, and constantly improving it's products
  7. ISP must have an attitude towards making my life easier, with simpler products, not more complex ones

WebAfrica does most of the above for me, at least to some degree. Wish they were a bit more competitive on pricing though. Telkom and Cybersmart are the worst.

Lower international latencies... IF that is even possible

competitive pricing
higher speeds
better connections
proactive
better response time to queries

Same speed all day long with transparent and managable shaping of protocols.

Hi folks

We are doing a short survey to try to understand what small and medium sized businesses want from ISPs. It will be great if you can tell us what your business expects from your ISP (hence not your residential needs, but rather your business needs).

Please post what you want from your ISP in your business here.

Good, stable connection running at acceptable speeds during the day. Fair pricing.

Call Centre Availability - I hate waiting for the support call to be answered
Stability and Uptime
No Oversold Contentions
Competitive Pricing

Consistency

Thats all I really want - everyone has issues from time to time with either service or line quality, but if the LEVEL of service just stayed constant as well as the lines themselves, then we would have a more peaceful world.

And why, if we have such an extensive telecoms network, is there hardly any redundancy!? If one thing fails then we have to wait forever for it to get sorted out. What ever happened to redundancy!? Why arent there channels that ensure that even if they steal on exchange cable that it routes via another route of some kind?

So I want an ISP that has backup options at least to provide a consistant service with minimal downtime. Downtime is always going to happen - just MINIMIZE it!

I certainly feel there are ISP's out there that know what business's need. My business required the following:

A stable and reliable connection
No shaping or de-prioritizing of any ports
Low latency

What I want from my ISP

Well it is really a simple one, I want value for money. I do not necessarily wants the cheapest service. I want more bang for my buck. I also want a ISP to work with their clients correctly. I mean I applied for a adsl line in Durban in Feb 2011, they said it was installed and started charging me 1 April 2011. (It has never been installed to date!) But yet had the audacity to debit my account on the 1st April 2011

Would I ever want to do business with that ISP? never ever again

ISP's should provide value for money and that means do proper customer service if they get that right they can get any customer on their side!
