I have opened up this thread to hear the views and opinions of users regarding MWEB's enforcement of their AUP, how and why you think it was enforced? As an MWEB customer of nearly 5-years (and someone who works in IT) AND a user who has been throttled
I want to better understand this enforcement through the opinions of us MyBB users
Please state if willing, if you are with MWEB and have/have not been throttled
Also if willing state how you think MWEB could better their throttling policy because truthfully I am disgusted by it.
Its ill-transparency and unknown limits are some of the root causes of frustration for alot of users after reading through all the forum articles
My opininion on the matter is as follows but before I do so I want to just list a few facts regarding the statments made by MWEB
- MWEB claims that 3% of their users are abusing the service and that the other 97% should not worry as the are likely to never reach this limit
How much is 3%? I want numbers!! So after some research on their website MWEB states that as of 2011 they had 200 000 ADSL customers. It has been 2-years since that number was published so I am sure they have more clients now but for the sake of this thread I will stick to that amount. 3% of 200 000 = 6000. So in essence 6000+ customers were mailed the abuse notice email. Definitely enough to cause an uproar on the social media platforms and forums. But to undermine the integrity, essence and marketability of their core product by punishing all their users for what 3% does is very curious.. And bloody outrageously unfair if you ask me...
MWEB also stated that the abusive 3% where using a quarter of MWEB's capacity. Again looking on their website it is made clear that they have a 23Gbps international IPC link and a 10Gbps local IPC link. Maths again 33Gbps/4 = 8.25 Gbps. So 6000+ users were using up to 8.25Gbps capacity per month. The interesting thing is that the CEO states that customers used more and more everymonth (even if it is a tiny amount) so even if 6000+ customers cancel eventually even the non-abusers will fall into the abuser category, and this brings me to my opinion on why MWEB is now enforcing their AUP so strictly.
Every company does yearly projections, we all know that, set sales targets and a bunch of others to measure the companies growth/decline over the fiscal year. It is in my opinion that MWEB simply put, overprojected and undermade. The could not keep up with the costs vs their own growth.
Their have been alot of external market influences that MWEB could of depended on or hoped for that just never happened, or an unforseeable change in a market or currency that they projected using, such as our dip in the US Dollar.
So yes I can understand why you throttle MWEB but in the manner that you do it? The sheer fact that you throttle the whole line instead of aggresively shaping P2P and Http Downloads protocols (where the bulk of people are downloading from) when a customer is deemed abusive Is like trying purposefully to get people to reduce how much they download so in turn you can recover from your financial loss.
Before I end my introduction to the thread I just saw one thing that is quite funny and contradictory - One of MWEB's values as stated on their site is "Revolutionary" now my question to MWEB guy is - How is this revolutionary?
So other My BB users please tell me what you think
