What PC Parts :(

So after searching a lot and reading many articles this is still not working properly. I did find a sort of solution tho.

In Strixx, I set the fan to Custom setting and then tweaked the timings as attached:

This way under normal browser use the fans are running very slowly and then when I game or do something more intense the fans speed picks up and so far so good.

I played a game earlier for about an hour and the fans were a little loud but I think my settings were wrong - had fan reach 90% speed when temps hit 75 degrees but realize that could be a little overkill.

Anyone have any tips regarding the settings that I can maybe improve on? As in different speeds maybe at temps as I want it to run the best it can.

Not sure what's causing the automatic option to keep it at 20% and not increase but if setting custom is safe I'm willing to try it out.

So any tips or advice would be great.

The fact that you had to intervene to get it to work shouldn't have happened in the first place, which only makes me think maybe it's some sort of firmware issue. I wouldn't have been happy if my brand new card did that, and it's a new Windows installation so I don't see rogue software that wouldn't let the fans spin up.

Agreed - sounds like the 0db mode has gone wrong. Fans are supposed to kick in around 65C, not stay off till the card shuts down.

Yeah I agree.

Very confusing and weird especially that it's brand new.

I tested again earlier using Unigine and monitored the temps and the fans didn't switch on at all so I quickly switched back to "Fixed" setting and the fans came back on.

So you think best just to send it back? Rebeltech said it would take 7-10 days to find out from the suppliers if there is a problem. So either send it now or I can try a few other things out and if that doesn't work then send it?

Is there not a setting maybe somewhere I missed (I did look everywhere tho). I read the card doesn't switch the fans on until needed but at what temps would it need to turn on or should they always be on at different speeds?

I would send it back now, you won't be able to game but I think you have a Xbox, and just use the iGPU until Rebel Tech sorts it out for you.

You shouldn't have to find a work around for something that should be working, the fan speed profiles you are creating is what the card should be doing by itself.

Yeah agree. Going to contact them this morning and request they collect it. I don't want to leave it and it gets worse and then there bigger problems down the line.

Should I maybe use this time to request a swap for a lower profile GPU (if that's at all possible) or won't I find anything similar in specs and price? I don't mind spending like a tiny bit more if it means I can close my case. The way I see it I will have to try sell the case (at a loss) and then add more cash to get another case that will fit or just keep the case and GPU with side panel off. On closer inspection, I doubt those braided power cables will make much difference.
 
Had you ordered a black case it would have been easier to sell on, if was about to say I might take it but then I remembered it's white.

Which 380X did you buy again, the sapphire or powercolor? Maybe contact their online tech support this morning and ask them. Also did you check if the fans spin up for a second on power on?

I thought I made a mistake with the white but once I unboxed it all doubt went away - really looks nice.

I got the Sapphire R9 380X. I will try get hold of their support but for now Rebeltech have agreed to collect the card tomorrow and take for testing. I have also asked when they find something wrong, if it's possible to get credit so I can purchase another card from them but on a quick look now, I don't really see anything that is similar in specs for roughly same price (I don't mind spending a little extra if I have to) but then again I'm not sure what to look for.

When I boot the PC the fans do spin for a second and then go off and don't come back on again (switched back to automatic profile to test).

Set the profile to automatic and ran the test. The card reached 95 degrees and the fans still weren't even moving and then the screen died so I had to do a hard re-boot. What was strange tho, normally when I start the PC, the GPU fans turn for roughly a second and then go off, this time tho they spun for 6-7 seconds before going off (this was after the temps reached 95 degrees and the display went dead) so they were obviously spinning so long to help cool it down so surely that must then mean something is wrong with the card?

This has honestly been the worst experience in a LONG time!!! All I wanted to do was move my main work system from Mac to PC and has been a nightmare since day one almost!

If its not one thing its the next thing.

In the past when I have built PC's for family and friends everything went flawlessly...

I think you might have a driver/software issue. The fact that the card auto spun up the fans when hot at boot time kind tells me it's ok but when the software takes control later on it's not working. Have you tried with the older catalyst drivers (all other fan control software removed)?

Another thing I picked up via google one guy removed his gpu and reseated it properly and then it was fine.

I will give this another try but this was on a fresh install of Windows 10 in a new system and the latest driver downloaded from the Radeon site. I installed the drivers before I installed any other software as well so not sure where a software issue could come from.

The fans always spun up at boot time for a second and then stopped except for the last time when it was warm still from the crash, they spun a little longer but then stayed off - even when the temps were still 75+ degrees when the system was booted.

Ive already packed up the card etc, is it worth it to try re-seat and see what happens?

OK so I just re-seated the GPU and then I booted into safe mode and used DDU to completely remove the Sapphire drivers and then also un-installed the Strixx OC Utility for my GPU.

When the PC was running without the GPU drivers installed, the GPU's fans would spin for half a second one at a time (like the first fan would spin for a split second and then stop and then the second fan would spin for split second and then stop etc). I then re-installed the latest drivers from Radeon site and did a reboot. Then I ran Unigine again and the same thing happened - after the first couple of scenes the test would freeze and the monitor would loose picture, forcing me to do a hard reboot again.

I am really lost as what else to try now? Should I try an older driver? The one I am using is the latest tested stable version (no beta etc) so that shouldn't be the problem?
 
If Rebel Tech finds a issue and you can get credit if you go for the Gigabyte version I think it will fit in your case.

The Sapphire card you have is 126.5mm and the Gigabyte is 114mm, but the Gigabyte has a lower Core Clock and Memory Clock, in the real word that translates to maybe 2FPS.

Yeah they said they will either credit or refund if they find issues with the card. Im pretty certain they will as I have tried multiple times, reseating the GPU, completely un-installing the drivers and re-downlaoding the latest version again but have the same issue.

Is there no version of the card which is the same as the one I have now or does the lower core and memory clock not make a big difference at all?

Is this the one you are talking about: GIGABYTE R9 380X

Is this card alot older than the one I have now and lesser performance etc: ASUS GeForce GTX 960 - I only ask because of its colour, would go great with my case but obviously only want to get something that is the same level or better than the Sapphire R9 380X.

The 380X and 4GB GTX 960 is actually very similar in performance, sometimes the 960 is faster and sometimes the 380X is faster but I do think the 380X is faster overall and wins more times than the 960.

I highly doubt the clock speeds would translate to 2FPS in the real world, would like to know other users thoughts on this, and the Gigabyte cards all have the same width, 114mm, so the other day when we talked about the 980 fitting into the Air 240 case that means if you get the Gigabyte 380X it will also fit.

The card in this picture is the same width as the Gigabyte 380X and you can clearly see it fits with about 1cm to spare between the power connector and side panel:
