What would you have done ?

Because it doesn't MATTER who does it, WHAT the profession of the person is or ANYTHING else, the only thing that matters is YOUR INSECURITY ABOUT THEM.

Yeah, for the rest of the world, if you see a guy and a girl together they could be siblings, lovers, friends, colleagues, cousins, etc. At which point did they automatically enter a relationship? Where did sexual orientation even become a factor in this?

Er... as for these "rules" of yours, does clubbing your potential mate in the head and dragging her off to your cave come into play at any stage? Because that's exactly what it sounds like.

Physical cowardice? So basically you punch anyone who upsets you in whatever way? And you ask me where "testosterone" or "fisticuffs" comes into it? You've just proven my point. It's got nothing to do with anything involving your higher faculties and rests solely on your ego.

Well-****ing-said!

Seriously, Lycanthrope have you lost your mind. When have I ever suggested punching someone? This entire argument has been very weird for me. You don't seem to have read a thing I've posted even when you've quoted me. Where have I suggested violence or even aggression as appropriate? At most I've suggested telling someone to go away politely.

It's like debating with a schizo. You're not even in the same ball park. You're having a Pavlovian response here. I suggest assertiveness and you read violence and testosterone.

Very fccking strange.

I'd smile at the guy every time he smiles at my GF. That oughta freak him out.

Yes, clearly they could be any of those, but it would be wise not to assume she is not his gf. Hence approaching them as a unit rather than risking dissing the dude if he is her bf. And even if he isn't why diss him anyway? Why wouldn't you approach a group as a group? This is plain, simple social awareness. For some strange reason you're actually arguing for douche bags that hit on guys gfs in front of them. Knee jerk much?

and lick your lips :D
yeah! you gotta turn the tables on him. Get her to flirt a bit with him and maybe you can end up getting a few free drinks or desserts etc. never underestimate the power of a woman. Guys will do anything if they think it's getting them somewhere.

Seriously, 1. he wasn't offended, 2. she wasn't offended. So what is the big deal, if my girl really felt uncomfortable I would most probably just leave if needed I'll confront the idiot, but I'm not a big fan of the whole 'hey boet ek gaan jou bliksem mentality'. I can stand my ground, but just hate pointless k@k like this.

Unless a guy is actively bothering your girlfriend ( ie. continuing actively to engage her after being asked not to ) stomping and acting all manly is comparable to primate behavior.

While you are at it just urinate on your girlfriend to bring the point across that she is "yours" :)

Then beat your chest and show him your silverback.

There could always be other reasons why the waiter was smiling at gf. Maybe he hooked up with her in high school

JYou'd do similar in any other situation you were being treated with disrespect so why not in this situation? Unless you were scared of getting punched in the face.

You guys going on about jealousy and insecurity... really I think it's just plain physical cowardice.

You have repeatedly brought physical hostility into this, mentioned that "in any other situation" you would react in the same way; to me, that implies that you're looking for a fight and you're pretty certain that it would boil down to a physical confrontation.

Maybe I've misunderstood your stance somewhere along the line but your stance most certainly doesn't seem like the "bigger man" approach and reeks of having something to prove (read: compensate for). If I have misunderstood then I'm sorry. However, you'll understand that from my perspective you're not exactly short on ambiguity (schitzo) either.

I agree, it's better to ask and be certain. However, the guy was hardly openly flirting with her. I mean this thread is about a waiter smiling at someone's girlfriend? I mean wow. Doesn't that tell you all you need to know about how ridiculous this is in the first place?

You and I evidently flow in different social circles.

Also, I'm not arguing "for douche bags that hit on guys' girlfriends in front of them" I'm arguing that this is something that has been taken out of proportion and most "men" in this thread are flexing their muscles to prove their manhood because "OH NOES SOMEONE SMILED AT MY GIRLFRIEND! TWICE!" I think it's stupid. I think it's overreaction. If the guy at sat down in front of them, next to the guy's girlfriend and said, "Hey baby, why not ditch this stooge and let's go somewhere?" I would first have laughed my arse off and secondly understood and appreciated the discomfort of the situation. However, I repeat: I would still have handled it in a mature and adult manner--first bringing it to his supervisor's attention, then deciding that this restaurant has no prospects for a decent lunch/dinner/whatever and moved on to another, laughed about it all and forgotten about it a few weeks later.

If in any other situation it happened, I would, along with my other half, just walked off and if he kept pestering/harassing/looking for a fight then I would once again do the adult thing and go to the copshop, and if he hits me, I'd have his ass in court. I would NOT be baited into having a criminal record for assault on my name for something so ridiculously petty.

Surely this is not rocket science and is something you can easily understand?

It's been like watching someone have an argument with their imaginary friend.

Like I said - Jerry Jerry Jerry!!!!

Physical cowardice? Dude - I'm 115kg, 1.87m - and not all of it is fat, my waist is 36"... one thing I don't fear is being hit , in fact - I'd let someone hit me just so I can ruin their future in court.

I trust my fiance, she knows exactly how to handle flirts - and doesn't need me to whip out my dick and show how big it is.I actually don't think someone has flirted with her in front of me, but it wouldn't bother me if they did - I'd only step in if the guy doesn't get the message when she gives bat

Congrats mate. :)
I missed that thread.

So what happens when you confront the guy and he says **** you, then carries on smiling or flirting or whatever it is that's upsetting you?

Congrats mate. :)
I missed that thread.

Thanks :) I didn't create one.... since March :p

(and there might be a thread soon, bought the ring from Browns - and one of the diamonds has fallen out - in under five months, the store is quite happily ignoring me now).

No, the only time I've mentioned physical hostility is when I've considered the possibility that perhaps you guys are so scared of the possibility that you would avoid it at all cost.

Maybe I've misunderstood your stance somewhere along the line but your stance most certainly doesn't seem like the "bigger man" approach and reeks of having something to prove (read: compensate for). It's certainly open to interpretation but if you see asserting boundaries as identical to physical aggression then I guess you would see ambiguity.

Whats ridiculous is that you have audacity to engage me when you are clearly unaware that I had already stated that any sort of response by the OP in the given situation would be inappropriate. I was talking about hypothetical situation were a measured response may be appropriate if handled correctly.

You and I evidently flow in different social circles.

Maybe, maybe not. I've never said that I would personally tell a guy to move on in a similar situation. In fact my way of handling that sort of situation is to just introduce myself and be friendly. It invariably has the same effect with the added bonus of diffusing any aggression while showing the guy that you wont be intimidated.

Completely irrelevant, since the discussion you butted into wasn't anything to do with the OP. It was about a hypothetical situation where someone was clearly hitting on your gf while you were sitting together.

Again, I don't understand how politely telling someone to stop bothering you as a couple must escalate to violence. Surely you could politely tell someone they are not welcome, then leave if that wasn't enough to get your point across.

I can only assume that the guys who are inordinately averse to any asserting boundaries to any degree are incredibly bad at conflict resolution.

Just an honest question: who here was bullied at school?

Surely this is not rocket science and is something you can easily understand?
