been looking at getting someone an ipad for xmas, but I have no idea what they are actually used for and if they are worth the expense.

And what is the memory for? between the 16gb or the 64gb there isnt really much to choose from, so is that memory or storage space, you cant store much with 16gb and then how would you use say the 3g - do you need a local 3g contract and sim?

I am just clueless but it sounds like it is the gadget to get this xmas, but is it worth the 6k-9k?

It does 90% of the stuff a PC can do, except it's very compact and portable and all-touchscreen. It's great for browsing the web. You can do email, youtube, play games, whatever. Go to apple.com to find out more.

In my opinion a 16gb iPad is fine. You can stream all your movies from your PC/Mac so you don't need them to be physically on the iPad.

3G is very useful and definitely makes it a lot more versatile. Try get a 3G 16gb. Also try get the Apple case. Here is some decent pricing on the iPad:

For me it's worth R4-6k, I wouldn't pay like R9k for it.

Now that Synaesthesia has given you the (supposedly) apple fanboy opinion I will give you the other one :P (Disclaimer: I'm not attacking you Synaesthesia)

You can watch movies on it, you can surf the internet with it, you can even listen to music. However, you can do all these things (and a heck of a lot more) for a heck of a lot less on a much bigger screen if you simply buy a laptop. Sure you lose the lovely, smooth and responsive capacitive touch screen but is it worth all that money? Sure you can also play games on it but only those that apple deigns worthy of app store status (you don't seem like a jailbreaker to me) and considering the specs you aren't going to be playing Crysis. It can be used an e-reader as well but without an e-ink display you're stuck with all the usual LCD limitations. You also can't multi-task (afiak, correct me if apple have sorted this out already) which is pretty bad.

Don't take my opinion to mean that I don't want an iPad, I'd love one. It is so pretty, so portable and so cool. I just can't justify the premium that apple puts on their devices because they are shiny and silvery and have a closed OS.

PS: I'm sorry if my arguments were not very coherent, at the beginning I was all inspired but as soon as I had to start Googling things my bed started calling and I just kind of trailed off.

You will be able to do multi-tasking on the iPad with the next software upgrade which will be free for download in November

It is a very portable device, that will outshine a laptop for battery life - 10 hrs and is "instant on" - no boot-up time. It is a great multi-media device for watching movies, looking at your pictures and listening to music. It is handy to take on the road, for web browsing. But, probably the best part of it - is the ability to choose from 250 000 apps that can be loaded onto it. Granted some are junk, but there are some gems - there is even an app that allows you to hook up your iPad to your car computer, and do fault checks and diagnosis of your car right on the iPad. There are apps to let it be used as a GPS (GPS chip is built-in), to listen to international radio stations....the list is endless - it's best you browse the app store and see what apps there are.
It is good to have just lying on the coffee table - there is an app for a DSTV program guide, so you can quickly check what is on DSTV. I think the 3G version is essential, if you want to take it on the road - and you will want to take it wherever you go. I have the 64GB 3G version, but I think 32GB should be big enough.

Heck, my iPad even paid for itself - with the bloomberg stock-market app, I was able to follow market trends and make enough money to cover what I paid for the iPad in the space of 6 weeks...

If you don't have one you'll probably find it hard to decide whether to get one or not. Once you have one, you'll not be able to live without it again.

its shocking that apple products usually cant multi task properly, i still have a 4 year old Se phone that multi tasks better than most apple products do without the mandatory "upgrades", i dont think the ipad is worth the price to be honest, its a decent gadget though with an awesome screen.

Got one for my grandpa. My 2 biggest impressions are: fantastic screen and good battery life. The IPS display really is all that. Makes you look at displays with a much more critical eye. Great contrast and viewing angles.

My other impressions are it's easy to use, it's a lot of fun, surfing the web is really awesome with touch and incredibly smooth. The 3D graphics on it are actually better than 90% of laptops ;)

To be honest I didn't even think it would be that great, and having used it a lot I can say it's a tremendous product.

It damages relationships. All the woman complain that their husbands now sit on their Ipods when in bed instead of talking.

I tell u what, I use mine at work to
Browse sites over 3g that may be an issue with the network policy etc etc.
To take my word/excel documents to meetings.
To remote to my pc to show my clients stuff when in meetings/on site.
Email

When I'm at home
When going to bed a lie there and stream tv(generally the poker channel) from the USA while I get sleepy.
I play games on the couch after supper etc etc.
I have my work email
My gf lies in bed playing puzzles on it.
I also lie in bed and browse the web quite a bit

Must admit - I was VERY skeptical about the iPad. I got one about 2 months ago and am LOVING it!!! I like it so much that I have stopped using my MacBook and bought an iMac to keep at home and use my iPad when not at home :) Obviously won't cover everyone's needs but should cover the needs of most people ;)

It does nothing except spy on you while you sleep and take naked photos of your wife. Then it sends them to Steve who has its way... It is a rip off, all people who buy one are retards!

Don't buy an iPad now, wait for the next model that supports HSPA+ 900MHz UMTS.

The current model is already obsolete.

As usual, ppl who can't afford one are jealous - shame dude, we pity you...
