WhatsApp voice notes getting big update

WhatsApp is rolling out a global voice note player on its iOS beta, according to a WABetaInfo report.

The feature — currently in testing — is intended to allow app users to listen to voice notes in the background. Currently, you have to remain in the chat containing the voice note to play it.

Would still prefer an option to block people from sending me voice notes.

This. Or at least a 15 second length limitation. And big red flashing bulb indicating to the sender that voice messages are blocked/limited.

My biggest problem with voice messages are people that can't come to a point and have to tell their life story before asking / saying what they want to say. A 5 second voice message from somebody driving saying they are 10 minutes late I can sort of understand.

Now that would be a killer feature!

Or a feature that transcribed the voice note back to text.
From the article
WhatsApp made several changes to its voice messaging feature in the second half of 2021, including transcription, the ability to pause and resume recording, and the addition of previews before a voice note is sent
Then from the linked article
This is according to a recent report from WABetaInfo, which said the voice transcription feature is currently under development on WhatsApp for iPhone and would be available in a future update for beta testers
<snip>
WABetaInfo said it was unclear if there were any plans to deploy a similar feature to WhatsApp on Android
So fancy iPhone users at least might get the feature. That was September last year though, so who knows if it will ever make it to a non-beta version.
