Interesting.

I was told mine plasma has IR because it was old.

But that was the number one reason for changing to LCD for me. The plasma had such a natural picture, but the image retention - no matter how temporary - annoyed me every time I saw it.

The most noticeable would be the white credits on black background on a movie. While dimming the screen, changing the mode, closing the curtains, setting the contrast, pausing occasionally, turning on Pixel Shifter Plus II and doing a small dance in front of the TV may have worked, I did find it easier to get a set that didn't have IR at all
 
I think my was late 2007 and I was told then that 'plasma screens of today have no such issue'
 
Wow thanks Pr⊕phet for bringing that up I too play MMOs and indeed the UI is static. I was getting ready to buy a plasma in the next week. You might of just saved me a bit of heartache.

I think I will go with a LED then, possibly the D6000 or the D6400 if I could find one.

Both the PS51D550 and UA46D6000 are great TVs, if possible it would be best if you could find a showroom where you can compare them side by side, so that your eyes can make the right choice for you.

For me the D6000 was my choice due to better reflection handling, higher contrast picture in bright environments and the main decider, better motion handling (could not eliminate horizontal panning judder on the D550).

Each have 3D ... plasma, LCD and LED

As for better, there's a preference with everyone as to what is better. Apart from a preference, it depends on what you're going to watch and how you're using the TV. Hence none of the technologies are dead - because there's no clear winner

No, most/all newer plasmas can still get IR. Normal operation. Much less commonplace on modern plasmas.

Repetitive IR eventually leads to burn-in. Not to be confused for being the same thing. Also, much less commonplace on modern plasmas.

No idea why you would need to resort to that sort of nonsense to prevent something that is normal operation. Perhaps that's where the misunderstanding lies.

Not sure why we even need to discuss this in this day and age of modern plasma. We have tons of actual plasma owners providing the facts, we don't need exaggerated stories based on 5 year old plasmas in order to attract people to a non issue.

I think you're forgetting that I was on the subsection before - and that I know the difference between the two?

Remember, I've also bought a plasma, LCD and LED .... and if you remember, when we looked at the LED there was a nice, large plasma on display. Great looking and I told my parents to go closer and maybe they wanted it.

Sadly - there was burn in ... and they choice another the LED instead. \

PS TYR still in the subsection? Do all the plasma buyers know what he said about his best plasma the world has seen - and his LCD? I think for those that weren't here back then, they'd find it interesting that his LCD is very much on par with his Kuro .... and d certainly a long way from how you like to punt that gap.

An LED won this year AFAIK. Real LED TV, full array with local dimming. Not comparable to LED edge-lit LCD most will be affording.

Plasma has won most consistently.

Test plasma in a shop that is abused daily is irrelevant compared to normal people using it in their homes.

His 7 Series LCD is nearly as good. I'm not surprised. It's been about 5 years since KURO tech, about time LCD started catching up. Otherwise why would people buy them (besides the marketing gimmick and anti plasma stigmas which we clearly see still incorrectly affects people in the current day).

For the record:

<2005 Pioneer KURO HD Ready
2010 Samsung LA46C750 Full HD

And the KURO is still better.

What was your point again?

Yes.

Why doesn't translate into the real world?

I'd expect to see millions upon million of plasma sets now. Truth is, there were there - and then declined to almost extinction over the last few years.

Are you going to tell me everyone on the planet is a mindless idiot that can't look at two screens and choose the better one? Or is there another reason plasma almost disappeared?

In my mind, a superior technology that is cheap and established in the market (ie plasma) would easily fend off inferior, expensive technologies?

But the LCD/LEDs next to them are abused just as much. The care-free nature of LCD/LED ownership is definitely a plus for me, can leave a letterbox movie paused for as long as I need without concern for any ill effect (whether real or perceptual).

BTW I quote from my TVs E-Manual (common for all D models) "Do not watch in 4:3 format for a long time. Traces of borders displayed on the left or right and centre of screen may cause image retention (screen burn) which are not covered by the warranty". Pretty obvious which models this refers to.

You honestly believe that marketing is that powerful?
It can make people buy a expensive junk product over a cheaper superior product?

My guess is that isn't the majority of the population.

I know if I walk into a BMW dealership to drop R400,000.00 on a car - the Chery salesman won't convince me his is the better car at the 10th of the price ... no matter how good his marketing is
