WHich is best? PLASMA vs. LCD vs. LED

We've been through this numerous times. Your "reasoning" is nothing new, and bores me. I'm not going to entertain and give you any satisfaction. I will play with you, but bring something new to the party, instead of insisting on this need to raise points which are irrelevant after acquiring a basic understanding of TVs.

I will only answer for the benefit of others:

Judging TVs under blaring fluorescents totalling thousands of watts, from a viewing distance no more than a shop aisle, with an "informed" salesman at your side, is about the works possible way to test TVs.

An analogy is that it's like going to a car show room and judging two cars because of the way they look.

Yay or nay?

Test plasma in a shop that is abused daily

I was awaiting the excuses ;)

Abused in the shop .... shop lighting .... salesman gets more commission ... signal feeds ... TV signals incorrect .... cable choice ... did I miss anything? Trying to go back to all the excuses you could think of back in the day when someone preferred LCD over plasma

Those are all very valid...

But the LCD/LEDs next to them are abused just as much. The care-free nature of LCD/LED ownership is definitely a plus for me, can leave a letterbox movie paused for as long as I need without concern for any ill effect.

BTW I quote from my TVs E-Manual (common for all D models) "Do not watch in 4:3 format for a long time. Traces of borders displayed on the left or right and centre of screen may cause image retention (screen burn) which are not covered by the warranty". Pretty obvious which models this refers to.

I'm glad that you find that of benefit, really. Enjoy your 4:3 and black bars on LCD care free. But please don't try mislead into others thinking they must have it, because that is what will be construed from your words, especially because of the anti plasma stigmas we still see today.

Perhaps the advice from those who actually use their plasmas with 4:3 for a long time would be better than those who don't really use their LCDs for 4:3 but push a "worrying about burn in" sentiment? Like those people/forumites with DSTV and .avi's and stuff, and those buying plasma after testing correctly after gaining a basic understanding in TVs and testing them?

Let those with image burn in speak for themselves.

I've read two cases on this forum, and i know at least 40+ have bought since last year.

Oh right. I forgot profits were irrelevant to salesmen, their employers, the brands.

Game and Makro's TV sections are only there to help us fellow kind human beings to get the best possible viewing experience to decide on what's best, with the best possible conditions, best possible TV settings, best possible advice, and the best possible sources and quality.

Thank you for enlightening me! You have restored my faith, and trust in humanity!

... and I forgot people are mindless, non thinking animals that can't see anything for themselves ... and rely fully on what the 21 year old salesman says.

I really can't believe that you guys think the power of marketing and promotion is THAT strong. Maybe I just run with intelligent people - but no one I know is going to choose a more expensive, substandard product that is right in front of them .... just because someone said it's better.

It's bizzare

Yeah, a cool dude rolling with other cool dudes.

Judging TVs under blaring fluorescents totalling thousands of watts, from a viewing distance no more than a shop aisle, with an "informed" salesman at your side, is about the worst possible way to test TVs. Would they tell you this?

An analogy is that it's like going to a car show room and judging two cars because of the way they look.

These are all valid and factual arguments which everyone here agrees with. If you still cannot udnerstand even after my analogy then there's no use going in circles.

You are right. It's a "Bizarre" fact.

Yeah, a cool dude rolling with other cool dudes.

Not 'cool dudes' ... just people that can think for themselves and make up their own mind.

I can understand reading a review and then making a wrong purchasing decision, but when both products are sitting in right of you - and have to be brain dead and zombie like blindly follow a salesman.

Lol, you still don't get it. I take it you chose your Volvo because of the way it looked on the showroom's floor and what the "assistant" told you about it in comparison to other brands, and not what you read on the internet and other informed media.

Yes - I looked at it myself ... and decided myself that I like it.

Almost like when I went into the store and saw my LCD side by side to the plasma next door and thought 'I like this. I prefer the picture. I will - therefore - buy this to replace my plasma at home'

There was nothing a BMW salesman could tell me that'd change my mind on what I had seen - another the TV salesman could say to convince me my eyes are deceiving.

When buying a big sound system - the first recommendation (from you too) is to listen and decide yourself. That's pretty much how it works with most products.

Misleading, thats rich coming from one as blinkered as you.

Point still stands, if you want peace of mind, not having to be concerned/careful with how you (or others e.g. kids) treat/use your expensive investment, then LCD/LED is a better bet.

You broke the first rule of testing TVs. Never test in store. Unless you put the LCD and plasma in a test room, at a proper AV shop?

It's best to test sound at Hifi Corporation, I'm sure we'll agree with that.

I find the additional info in this text very interesting, if you read between the lines.

LET THERE BE (BETTER) LIGHT
Seems simple enough, right? But buyer beware: there are different types of LED backlights. One common approach puts rows of LEDs only around the outer edge of the screen and bounces their light off a reflector to acheive full screen coverage. While edge-lighting can be an effective solution where cost is of concern, it can’t deliver light across the full screen surface with the near-perfect uniformity of a full matrix of LEDs behind the entire screen. And the “zone lighting” of an edge array always results in some dimming of nearby white areas whenever the backlight is shut down to improve the blacks. That affects the reproduction of highlights.

Which TV model's available locally use the LED matrix?

Guys, can I throw in a suggestion that this discussion ends.

It's clear that everyone has their opinion on the matter and this isn't going to be settled...

Just because Dolby found it in his stride to spam the thread with off topic arguments? What a shame.

It's the season to purchase "Big Screens" and the advise that Postman gave was very valuable and informative to many MyBB members, see member feedback, as opposed to the Dolby arguments.
