Which is the Fastest Booting / Smallest Linux with Wifi Connectivity

Hi,

My friend bought this new ASUS Laptop that came with LinPus...which is basically linux...

Has a gr8 GUI and Wifi etc works on it...

boots up in 6 seconds.

The Main Applications:
Web Browser,
Skype,
Music Player etc..

which is the only things needed sometimes.

Can we install something like this on a Flash disk and use it when we need instant internet connectivity.

You will not get the same speed from a flash based Linux because on such distros some of the code to the OS is already embedded into the BIOS, therefore the "instant on" feature.

There are a host of these "instant on" "applications/distros", but they are all OEM.

That said, you can get a Linux distro with all the bells and whistles to boot lightning fast from a flash drive, not instant on, but fast still. I have no benchmarks to back me up but it should probably be under a minute depending on the CPU and amount of RAM of the host machine.
So to answer you quaestion, get Puppylinux (http://puppylinux.org/main/index.php?file=Download Latest Release.htm) and install it on a flash drive, there is a feature for this on the install CD:

You don't have to install Puppy (to hard disk) to use it. Simply burn the ISO to CD/DVD and boot the PC or laptop with it. Once booted, you can then install it to USB flash (see the Setup menu), so you can use it for booting the PC when a CD is not available.

Probably slashtop. Boots in like 2 sec. You'd have to check about wifi though.

Splashtop is OEM and not available for download (like mentioned, it comes pre-installed on some vendors' machines) and you will have no use for it if you could download it, unless you are apt enough to hack your own BIOS.

basically matching my needs...

- Linpus Lite.....Trial Version
- and some more for the same use...

but just want to use some advice bfore trying.

I do not want to punt one specific distro, but PuppyLinux was made to be lightweight and it is a breeze to get going on a flash drive.

Basically any scaled down distro will be able to handle what your requested, here is another few that are well established:
DSL (Damn Small Linux)
Knoppix

Although i got Ubuntu Netbook Remix installed..and is gud enough for the requirement i had.

If you are only using it on a specific machine/hardware then you could always use something like arch linux & a custom kernel you built yourself. Strip everything out of the kernel that does not pertain to your hardware and it should be much smaller & faster to load, or so I think. Arch also has systemd these days which doubt you will see in any debian based distro any time soon.

Yes but I doubt it will ever be part of the default install/system due to it not complying with certain 'posix?' standards and cannot be implement across all their branches and platforms, debian kfreebsd comes to mind.

I know nothing about it so I cant comment. Generally is FOSS, if its better it gets adopted (over time). Im all for anything better
