Which student car is better?

With a R60k budget? You are probably the most out of touch guy, when it comes to car prices, that I've ever seen...
I wasn't commenting on price in the slightest. . Merely on the options listed.

I am very much out of touch with car prices because I refuse to pay the ridiculous sums people are asking for cars these days. In saying that I am aware she will struggle to find a focus for that kind of money but it's not impossible.

I need a student car too - the Fiesta is very light on petrol (borrowed one for a while). Only prob my budget is like 30-40k. Is it gonna be a mission finding one that doesn't break down on me 24/7 at that price?
Unfortunately you probably will struggle... an opel corsa lite on the other hand should be easy enough to find in that price range.

Giving a student advice to buy a R60k Focus is... bad advice. They should be buying a smaller car, with lower mileage, at that price. Even a Fiesta could be a bit of a gamble.

Focus seems like the best bet. Also watch the insurance...car tend to disappear off student parking.

On the subject of insurance....

Some insurance companies have a nasty little clause to the effect that if the car is in the possession of a second party other than a designated driver (workshop, panel beater, car wash, airport parking) it is not covered and, in the event of loss/damage/theft, will give the owner a Vaseline finger.

My son left his Prado at a Toyota dealer from where it was stolen and neither the dealer nor the insurance company cares.

Honestly.. It was presented as an option by th op and as such it's the best car of the options listed if you can find a good one in the required price range... yes that could be tricky but it is not impossible in the slightest. It's just not something you walk into a dealership and go "I want that one".. The op will need to hunt and such.

Agreed! :)
It's actually my 2nd student car.
The first was a beautiful 1972 Beetle [the REAL understanding of the word 'student'], so I'm very proud to have saved more and to be able to upgrade a bit XD :)

Except for crash protection and comfort, I think you're downgrading. :)

If the beetle is in good condition, then yeah, in general I tend to agree with you...

Its a gorgeous car and has boat loads of character....

At 60K I'd say a Honda Jazz is within reach. That's where my money would go. I've helped my friends fix their fiestas and focusses more times than I care to count, and polo's are just plain overpriced imho. Toyotas tend to disappear out of parking lots.

Depends on how you feel about driving and cars. If you find driving a daunting task that consumes time you could have spent better otherwise and you see cars as mundane equipment for getting you from point A to point B then I would say get a VW. Preferably a 1.4 Vivo as the performance and styling is pretty much on par with most household appliances.

You wont get a safe Polo vivo for 60k. Go for the Polo. Its a solid build and plenty of after market styling accessories for it.

After marker styling accessories for a VW is like racing stripes on your toaster or washing machine. It was intended to look boring and be functional, that is why you bought it. Why mess with that now?
