Which VPN do you use?

Private Internet Access. Just resubbed for my second year. Great speeds and a choice of where to connect.

If you want to tunnel in Windows. I use:

Proxifier - Not needed, but great if you have multiple tunnels and you want various applications and services to use specific connections.
Bitvise Tunnelier - Cool application to allow you to create a socks5 proxy with a ssh connection in Windows

Now you need something to SSH into, ideally you dont want to pay for this service, so what you can do is sign up for Amazon EC2, get a free tier ubuntu instance, and then connect bitvise to it. I dont do this because it means your connection goes via the US, and I prefer breaking out in the EU.

There you go, 100% free tunneling service that will bypass traffic shaping, sniffing, etc.

I use AirVPN, great service IMO, speed is good and security is tops as well.

And which one is that?

I trialed Unotelly but Netflix identifies and blocks it.

Unotelly is a DNS service, isn't it? I use ExpressVPN. There's a specific one of their servers you need to connect to, and it works a treat. If you get it you can just PM me.

I only use a VPN to access work stuff, not for circumventing regional blocks. normal windows vpn client used.

Unotelly had a VPN service as well. I paid $2.49 a month on their black Friday special a couple of years ago

Software: Openvpn (openvpn protocol) or softether (L2TP/IPSec)
Servers: Home (ZA on my Pi), or a private one atop my seedbox in France (or other places if I ask nicely) (snthostings - honestly best service on the planet). Also in the past used PrivateInternetAccess and was happy
Reasons: Getting past firewalls, geounblocking, torrenting or anytime somewhere public

I'm a newb to vpns.

Does a vpn slow the internet connection down?

Do I have to out the VPN settings on my router? Or use the apps?

What's the benefits of a VPN?
How much should I pay?
Which VPN should I get?

Thanks

Depends. If the server has more bandwidth than where you are connecting from, then in theory no. For example my Pi at home hosts a VPN on a 100/100meg fibre line, and I get max speed anywhere in SA. My international VPNs I have chosen because they have +1Gbps bandwidth, so any "slowdown" I feel (worst I have experienced is 60mbps hehe) is more a routing issue from SA to the server on the other side of the planet.

Fancy routers can route all your network traffic through the VPN if you want, otherwise a more reasonable approach is to connect to the VPN on each computer/laptop/tablet/cellphone as needed when needed. You shouldnt need to use an app as most if not all phones/OSes can do L2TP/IPSec / Openvpn natively

All of your traffic is encrypted and treated equally. This provides security for you (if doing something like banking using public wifi - just keep in mind you need to trust where your VPN server is hosted isnt compromised, because out of the VPN server traffic isnt encrypted anymore), also helps you get around firewall blockings or georestrictions (you pay for it legally you are entitled to it as far as I am concerned)
How much should I pay?
How long is a piece of string? Depends what you use it for - 10USD/month will get you something shiney. Any more than that you are either overdoing it or are having the mickey taken out of you
Which VPN should I get?
PrivateInternetAccess is a good starting one (they cater more to torrenting really). I have heard good things about tunnelbear (geounblocking). Of course the best solution is to host your own VPN on a private server hosted on a server farm somewhere (or at home for you to do banking safely anywhere) - but that is likely way too involved and technical for most peoples' needs. SNTHostings does this for me and service is top notch and hooked me up with VPNs in France, UK, Europe, China and Aus ; though you'll probably need to ask them nicely if you want the same (and pay a little extra for it too...)

Thanks.
I have a 4mbs adsl line and can't have it any slower. My main connection is the MTN 50gb promo using a Huawei lte modem. I may do some torrenting which may become a concern without a vpn.

Found a nice little app yesterday that monitors your VPN connection called VpnCheck.
It monitors your VPN and the moment it drops or disconnects, VpnCheck quits a program of your choice, ie, uTorrent.
Then when the VPN reconnects, it auto starts up your program again, very neat :)
