What a way to end the weekend.

Young NAS, with lots of dark chocolate and cherries...like a Black Forest Gateau. Delicious stuff indeed.

Sounds amazing! Seems this one was highly recommended in the past. After my little highland park 12 incident (the cork broke when opening and it was worse than a blend) I'll skip their stuff for a bit.

Picked up these from pnp for half price. Very pleased with the spice tree, the three wood is nice I'm not the biggest sherried whisky fan.

Unlike all of you I just have a cupboard, that's now too full but that next three ships release still has to fit in, for whisky (and a few oddities). I have to keep it closed because the cats want to explore the cupboard! The Irish boutiquey is my Fiancée's (she won it lol) will probably try it in October.

Went to a PnP in Jhb on Saturday, full of hope.... alas :cautious:

Yeah it's sadly one of those things that is only hope, I got those from two stores and visited six. No clue how they're doing things, one of the six had discounted stuff the next morning. Could have been a western cape thing, it's different here. Heh.

What is the Reason for making a whisky or rum etc only for duty free?

Phuck knows.

But when I chatted to Andy Watts some time ago regarding the fact that Bains 15 was a travel retail exclusive (and distillery) he basically said it was a marketing decision driven by the exposure that you get from a captive audience and, in Bains' instance, you end up getting international brand exposure.

Just finished my first Boplaas Whisky
(BOPLAAS SINGLE GRAIN WHISKY (BRANDY CASK FINISH)

MARKETING!

Honestly I dislike the decision because there is a growing local market. I believe there will be a Bains 10 locally

Jissus are you serious???? I bought that stuff then proceeded to take the paint off on the outside walls.

One of my colleagues said they liked it, I was surprised as I've only heard it was 'average'...I wonder if their 6 year old is better though.

Yes but if you have it in stores and duty free then its still marketing or is it seen as more prestigious due to the fact that the buyer traveled 'internationally'?

I asked Andy about this specifically around the new 18yo release. He said the challenge was because the volumes were so low they have to decide who gets stock and who doesn't. If he sends the stock to Checkers, PnP gives him lip and vice versa. Even then, like we saw with the recent private barrel JSD, only some stores get stock. On top of that he had a complaint from some oke in putsonderwaterdiebuffelislankaldoodenmoertoe fontein because his local Checkers didn't have stock. So basically politics.

Personally I still think there is opportunity to allow some form of online ordering from JSD in addition to stock at the distillery. Nothing prevents you from imposing purchase limits to prevent hoarding. I also can't see why some of the local specialist online stores can't get some consignment (WB, WaW, Bottega) and skip the big retailers (boo-hoo).

Anyway it seems for now the low volume special releases (for Bains at least) will carry on at duty free and the distillery. Three Ships Masters Collection will be online and in stores and I imagine we will carry on seeing Private Barrel, Boutique-y etc. once off releases over time.

Are you sure that's the correct picture you posted?

I recently tasted a variant that no longer has the brandy cask finish on the label. It was actually quite pleasant.

I have tasted the early brandy cask finish releases and it was a drink that didn't know if it was a whisky or a brandy. Waaaay to much brandy influence.

So I think if you've had it before check the label and give it another go.

Edit: Checked their site now and it still says Brandy Cask finished. Mmmmm, maybe they dialled back the time spent in the barrel then? It certainly is much different now than it was when it first appeared on the market.

Thanks, might just give it another go then. I remember the one I bought was in 2017, came in that round carton without a label on the carton.

Would love some sort of online ordering and they do have a platform but they don't use it. As far as I know you need to do the tour to purchase from the distillery? I think if specialists at least got a look in, it would be cool maybe even bottled as 'James Sedgwick Distillery'?

Is there any Rye Whiskey I can get locally that's not too expensive? Curious to try it but they go for R1k+ on bottleshop...

Sazerac rye, around the R700 mark. Excellent

Edit: R550 from NGF
