Honestly, at fractionally cheaper than the Ardbeg 10, I don't see it's worth it. Hell, it's a 5% difference in price for literally half the age on the whisky, and from what I've seen reviews state of it, it's the same whisky, just "young".
It's really, really good IMHO....and worth having it in your collection.

It's really well made and balanced and definitely not just a Ardbeg 10 that was taken out of the barrels 5 years early.

I'm only going on reviews, I'll be honest, but if you give me the choice between an older dram and a younger newbie at similar price points, I'll usually take the older one. I'll pitch the Wee Beastie next to the 10 this weekend, in a side-by-side perhaps, and then I'll make up my mind.

I got lucky and got a sample, for me it's just not worth the price as to me it tastes as bad as JW Red. If it weren't for the heavy Islay Peat, I'd be calling it cheap swill. I honestly don't know what Ardbeg was thinking with this, there's plenty of good whisky made with 5 year old whisky that I like more such as Glen Scotia Double Cask (and that's not even something I like). The 10 is good though but meh think I'll be taking a break from Ardbeg for a while.

I think we're going to see the 10yo price creep up over the next few months. Already new stock is coming in at R700. That gap is going to climb is my guess.

It'll put Ardbeg out of my "regular" drinking though. I was impressed enough with Laphroaig Select to easily swap to that if I need a cheap peat every now and again. The Select is also a bit easier drinking, and a bit sweeter, and at almost half the price of the new pricings I honestly think it's a great whisky to have on hand.

On a related note - my corn mash whisky wash is fermenting along. Posting this only because the smell is in my nose right now, and it smells amazing. Sweet, like sickly sweet, said to be from the soured corn (yes, the wash accidentally soured). Might not get a high ABV out of it but I'm OK with that. I'll just distill it for flavour and mix with other first distillate and run it for quality in the spirit run. I can't wait!

Ardbeg 10:

Takealot: R 649
NGF: R 629
Makro R 619
WB: R650

Wee Beastie: R 595 excl. shipping at WaW
Wee Beastie R 595 excl shipping at Bottega

We will only now when Beastie hits retail, what the shifts will be. It is aimed at the retail market

Checkers latest price is 699, but from your list that seems to be the exception at the moment.

Any suggestions for someone who enjoys whisky/whiskey and is looking to explore without spending a fortune?

Thanks for the suggestions ;) I have tried and enjoy the Glenlivet Founder's Reserve and Makers Mark, I actually enjoy bourbon from time to time. I have tried a Auchentoshan, I can't recall if it was the American Oak but I didn't enjoy it much from memory. I am also wanting to go back to Bottega some time and do some tasting, it is only a km or so from our house, convenient.

I can recommend the Loch Lomond 12 YO that is on special at Checkers (just get the orange card if you don't already have one)

Can second this as quite liked the 12 but for the cheaper option grab an Inchmurrin 12 should be 312 with the rewards card which is an absolute steal.

Another cheap whisky option I can thoroughly recommend is the Glen Moray Peated from Liquor City, not all stores have it but it often goes on special for R299 and it's one of my favourite peated single malts (just don't expect Islay peat, it's not that).

Thanks, I'll give the Inchmurrin 12 a try, I have a bottle of Glen Moray Classic Peated Single Malt in the cupboard which I bought after trying it at my girlfriend's parents house.
