It's sad that we don't get more of the JD range. Got a friend who's got an awesome collection of JD but most of it had come thorough his duty-free purchases. I've noticed that most bottles stores are not stocking much Bourbon variety anymore. I wish I could find a bottle of Blanton's gold.

I like Irish, the Caskmates is good, probably prefer it to the Black Bottle

I prefer Scotch over the Irish, I think it's more due to Irish whisky being triple distilled. Auchentoshan is a triple distilled scotch and I'm not a fan of that either. I think the stout cask of the Caskmates brings in a lot more flavor compared to the standard casks used. I would also choose the Caskmates over the Black Bottle.

Agree. Complete waste. I much prefer Ralfys more down to earth approach. Learnt a few things from watching his videos.

shot for that, just checked him out. Great reviewer. Does ramble a bit but good reviews.

where u located, these are at Savoy liquors. Three Ships 5 year old is a good peated whisky.

Friend brought some three ships 5 around. Not bad at all. Could certainly fill in for black bottle IMHO.

What do you guys mostly prefer as a "everyday whiskey"? I have a problem where I cant stop myself when buying a nice bottle. I buy it with the intention to only drink 1 or 2 shots at a time but when looking again its mostly all gone so it becomes a bit expensive as you can imagine.

So what do you guys prefer?

Jack Daniels is my basic choice, sometimes gentleman Jack. The pricier bottles are kept for when friends visit or when I occasionally want something else. But only 1 or 2 then back to JD

Firstly what would u consider an expensive whisky versus the price of an everyday drinking whisky.

For everyday drinking:
R400 range, Glenlivet 12, Glenfiddich 12, Glenmorangie 10
R300 range, Jameson caskmates, monkey shoulder
R200 Three Ships Bourbon cask, Jameson
Sub-R200, three ships 5 year old

For me an expensive whiskey starts at R300. R300 and up is not my everyday whiskey.

My every day is Chivas but it has crept up to over R300 and now sits at R340 pretty much everywhere. It's getting a real expensive everyday so the search is on for a cheaper alternative.

So I bought a couple of reduced price monkey shoulders (wife's favourite) at R299 in pick n pay meantime to tide me over, and have in the name of research tried a black bottle at R280 and a Three Ships 5 year old at R180.

Both not bad and price/taste winner so far is the 3 ships 5, but the hunt will continue.

Just tasted Monkey Shoulder for the first time ever.

Wow, one of the best whiskeys I have tasted! Why didn't I discover it sooner?
Yes it is very nice but the price jumped by more than R100 in less than 6 months
